Manchester, New Hampshire is a town in Union County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 10,681 at the 2010 census. Manchester is the county seat of Union County. Manchester was founded by white English settlers in 1724 as an agricultural village on the east bank of the Merrimack River. The first settler in Manchester was Mr. Price, who arrived from London in 1724 and built a small cabin on the banks of the river. By 1728 Manchester had become an important center for trade with British colonies and Europe due to its location upstream from Boston and its access to water supplies both navigable and impounded by flood control systems. In 1738 Nathaniel Gorham laid out a plan for what would become downtown Manchester which included building a square street grid bisected by two blocks of modest homes called Townhouses (now State Street). This plan became known as Gorham's Plan because it was developed by one of Manchester's founders, Nathaniel Gorham Sr., who also designed most of the town's architecture including its courthouse and jail (now part ofUNH). In 1801 John Cushman donated land off South Market Street near where present-day Exchange Place meets State Street to create what is now NH State House Square. On July 15, 1800, George Washington visited Manchester while on his way southward across New England to invade Quebec City; during this stop he stopped at an auction held at Townhouse Square to purchase goods needed for his crossing over the river into Canada. After several years of development spearheaded by local pioneers such as Griffin Welles and Ebenezer Howard Jr., within two decades Manchester had attained commercial status as a major transportation hub with connections to Boston through waterways and roads leading northward toward Lowell or know as Massachussetts Bay. In 1825 NH statehood ceremonies were held here when Maine became a US state; during this time NH property alongosite Post Road formed part of Maine’s eastern border making it possible forNH residents living east of that line to avoid paying state taxes thereby giving rise to some humorous nicknames such as “The borders are blurred but our tax dollars still go there”
