The town has been located on the Portsmouth Peninsula since 1695 and was chartered as a village in 1723. Portsmouth proper was platted in 1768 and became an incorporated town in 1802. The town gained its current name from its location on the Portsmouth Peninsula - meaning " fortified island" - when British warships used the peninsula to provide cover during their bombardment of Boston during the American Revolution.
