The first telescopes were built in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and Ebenezer Congreve. The two men were the founders of the American Astronomical Society. In 1802, Dr. Benjamin Banneker erected a telescope at Congaree Hill in Portsmouth to measure the declination of the Moon. In 1844, Reverend Nathan Fairbanks constructed a new reflecting telescope known as the Maine General for use on Long Island Sound. From 1848 until 1861, Reverend George Catlin used an 8-inch refractor at North Greenbush to measure stellar movements around Cape Horn. In 1886, Dr. George Washington Custer installed a 4-meter aperture reflector at Mount Olympus in Portsmouth along with his 6-meter Hale Telescope and 10-meter Heidelberg Reflector located at Sunnyside Observatory near Syracuse, New York which was also used for meteorology during 1886 and 1889 hurricane seasons. In 1932, Drs Julius Hirschfeld and Konrad Zuse erected a 36 cm Schmidt telescope on Pond's Beach in Muskegon Heights for astronomical research purposes only which was later converted into an observatory that is now known as the Cleveland Observatory Complex (Cleveland Museum of Natural Sciences). In 1938, Drs Franklin Dyson donated his 2 meter aperture reflector called "Nova" to be used by scientists working on gamma ray astronomy from East Meadow Naval Air Station on Long Island Sound aboard HMS Erebus during this time period while also servicing other naval stations across America including Groton Harbor Naval Air Station on Connecticut’sLong Island Sound where he developed plans for building an experimental flying laboratory using aircraft then under development at RAF Hendon England but never completed due to World War II interruption however it is still operational today located adjacent to Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) home of Goddard Memorial Space Flight Center operated by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) providing launch services for air & space missions going back to 1969 when Operation Paperclip pianized ESO/RADIO telescopes from JPL to ECSU via Arianespace

In 1898 USS Maine sank here off North Hampton beach while serving as flagship for Rear Admiral Dewey during World War II; she lies submerged beneath today’s shoreline near where Hingham Point Light lighthouse once stood In 1865 NH created its first congressional district including Portsmouth along with other towns line up along the coast which would serve their needs politically until NH abolished representative districts in 1912 In 1912 NH merged with Vermont to create theVT District 1 Portsmouth's history begins with Captain John Smith's arrival on July 4th 1607 when he named it after his homeland - Portsmouth England There are numerous stories about how this event happened but perhaps one that most people know about is that Smith landed onshore and erected a crossroads marker which still stands today - near present day Hingham Point Light Lighthouse .Boatloads of settlers started arriving soon after this event and by September 1607 there were already 6 families living in town - all under instruction from Governor David Dudley .Captain John Smith also left behind quite some artifacts such as two cannons (one still resides at Plymouth Museum) as well as many tools and supplies needed for farming including land lottery tickets which allowed colonists to purchase land they could build upon The early days were difficult for those living in town because they lacked access to basic goods like food or water so residents turned to fishing or hunting for sustenance .
