On January 1, 1850, Romeford and most of what is now Monroe County were consolidated into Rensselaer County when Albany became a county. The town of Rochester was founded in 1775 by Joseph Reed and others as a trading post on the east bank of Cayuga River near present-day North End. In 1800 it became an incorporated city under charter from state governor George Clinton with a population of 10,000. With growth came pollution and problems with water supply; in 1854 annexation to Syracuse made Rochester an even larger city but its water supplies improved so much that it reverted back to its original status as a small town until 1959 when it became one again under charter from New York State government under Governor Nelson Rockefeller (1909-1973). Rochester began to experience prosperity during World War II due to military activity there; production increased for shoes, tires and other products obtainable only outside war zones such as Europe; however this prosperity did not last long after hostilities ended because many jobs left for better paying jobs in neighboring towns or cities during peacetime.
