Somersworth is a small town in Hampshire County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Somersworth is part of the Manchester–Newark–Hampden, NH-RI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Somersworth was Nicholas Winthrop in 1735. Winthrop brought with him his wife and four children from England. By 1800, Somersworth had a population of about 150 people. The first post office was established in 1810 and continued to serve until 1877. In 1860, the town became an incorporated village and remained so until 1984 when it became a full municipality under statehood. Somersworth's downtown core is anchored by two large granite blocks that were donated by local businessmen John Pritchard and Harry Vinton in 1965 as part of a civic investment program called " Granite for All." Both blocks are used as meeting spaces for various organizations within the community and also offer views of the surrounding countryside while inside the bounds of Somersworth's City Hall building which has been home to many different businesses over its history including a bank (First National Bank), three retailers (Jenny Bickman's Joesmith Hardware & More, Sears Roebuck & Co., Wawa), two restaurants (Fodor's Travel Guidebook Store - now Alma) as well as numerous other small businesses and residences since 1978 when it moved from its original location on High Street into its current building on Merrill Drive adjacent to First State Bank which replaced Wawa back then as the primary store chain in town today. According to Rick Majerus who wrote "A History of Manchester" published by University Press Of New Hampshire in 1992: "In their desire to promote growth throughout their village they erected granite pillars across High Street just east of where First State now stands... these marks served both as deterrents against shoplifting during winter months and also allowed merchants to measure customers' sizes more accurately." The squares off each corner were later designated fire hydrants providing further evidence that this type of public/private partnership helped spur economic development in Somersworth over time During recent years there have been several attempts made by some residents within Somersworth to gain control over important aspects or even dissolution of city services such as water treatment plants etc., but all have failed due largely or completely to opposition from business owners within the town itself . One example is currently being fought by residents who oppose plans for an expressway through their towns center that would run concurrent with Route 93 traffic heading northbound; this would directly impact not only business owners located along Routes 93&4 but also residential properties situated east/on Route 12 making it difficult if not impossible for them everto get alternative transportation options without significantly impacting property values Their main contention seems simply be profit motivated self-interest rather than any genuine concerns about how this project could negatively impact their neighborhoods or resident qualityoflife

Somersworth is a town in New Hampshire, United States. It is the seat of Somersworth County. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. Somersworth is part of the Nashua-New Hampton-Lebanon, NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Somersworth were people from England who came to what is now Manchester in 1624. They built a smallington farm and named it Somersworth after their home country. The first post office in Somersworth was established in 1806, and the town taken on its present name in 1869. The early days of this town were very hard fought as it was contested by several different interests including the Dutch, British Tories, Quakers and more importantly Native Americans who inhabited much of what is now Somersworth Township. However through patience and persistence over many years they eventually achieved some semblance of order which has later been integral to their success both politically and economically. This process started with the arrival of Captain John Winslow who surveyed the area for possible settlement back in 1705 A.D.. He initially recommended that a small community be formed near Portsmouth but after much discussion among his fellow colonists he decided against it due to competition from other settlements nearby (i.e., Portsmouth). As Winslow himself put it: “There had then been but one settlement within six miles of us; so great had been our want of facilities for trade that we could not have supported ourselves without intercourse with others” . Captain John Winslow's recommendations led to Lieutenant Edward Arnold coming overland from Norwich with plans to establish a trading post at present day Portsmouth Landing on Haverhill Road near modern day Middleboro where Arnold would soon build an additional building known as "The Old Tavern" which still stands today (along with several buildings associated with him such as The Winthrop House). One can travel down Haverhill Road today all the way to Fryeburg where he landed his goods! In fact there are even two namesake roads located close by - Route 2A just south of downtown Hubbardston & Route 1A just north of Greenfield Village - both serving as tours stops for those interested in learning more about early twentieth century history! Anyway back to business – throughout most or all OF NEW HAMPSHIRE Captain John Winslow operated one stop along this route; ferrying goods between Plymouth & Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during peacetime while also transporting passengers across Long Island Sound during wartime! Although never considered commercially successful, this venture did lead directly to establishment of what would become Somersworth Township when Captain John Willslow sold his interest share in 1735 To Samuel Hickson Sr.). So yes – even though Captain John Winslow left little evidence behind him when he passed away circa 1710 A.D., his legacy Lives On…literally! Today's businesses and citizens here continue his values and focus on providing quality customer service wherever they go!
