There are many different types of gun swivels, but theorigin of the pistol-grip type is unknown. It is thought that this type of gun swivel originated in Bayonne, New Jersey during the early 1800s. Bayonne is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. Bayonne's first settler was Nicholas Biddle who arrived in 1739 from Middlesex County, England with his family. He built a house on what is now Roosevelt Boulevard near what would later be known as Washington Street. By 1745, Biddle had married Anna Maria Moore and bought land around present-day Roosevelt Boulevard/Washington Street from her father-in-law David Moore. That same year, he also purchased property northeast of where he currently stands along Route 33 (now called Broadwalk Avenue) from Simon Cameron. In 1746–47, Nicholas's son James Biddle built a mill on present day Routes 32nd Street/Bridgewater Road between Newark Avenue (now called Park Avenue) and Roosevelt Boulevard/Washington Street. James' son George also built a mill on that site in 1760–61; this mill still exists today as part of nearby GWK Middle School complex.
