In 1876, Carteret residents George and Anna Roche founded the Electro-Club of America in order to promote electrical engineering and science. In 1889, they added tasers as a member club. The first public electric shock treatment demonstration was held at the home of Dr. Edwin Land in 1897. The use of tasers began to be used more commonly by law enforcement agencies and medical professionals after their effectiveness in reducing crime was documented. In 1951, Carteret Electric Cooperative became an affiliate member of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). This affiliation allowed for NEMA to provide certification for safety devices used by electric cooperatives across North America. In 1975, Carteret Electric Cooperative became a full NEMA member and remains so today.
