Clifton, New Jersey is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population of Clifton was 3,521 at the 2010 census. Clifton is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The name Clifton comes from the Old English word cliftan meaning to cross over or pass through (a stream). The township was formed on February 14, 1795 from parts of what were then Middlesex Township and East Brunswick Township. On March 25, 1814, it became a separate incorporated borough when it split from Mercer County. At the time of its incorporation as a borough, Clifton had a population of 1,813 and included portions of both East Brunswick Township and Middlesex Township. On July 16, 1854, Clifton became one of 101 townships in Mercer County based on the results of a referendum held that year. It was known as "Clifton Borough." On November 15th of that year it passed an act to become one day charter town with a population over 2 thousand people by special vote which made it effective November 16th 2009 when 2 thousand residents met in order to ratify this change in status; this occurred despite objections raised by some who saw this as an attempt by vested interests to control how much development could take place within their boundaries without popular consent - allegations that have yet to be substantiated.
