Eatontown is a hamlet in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. The name "Eatontown" is derived from the Dutch word " Eaten," meaning to live off of or trade with. The community developed around an early post office and general store called "the old farm." It became a town on July 12, 1881 when the Township of Eatontown merged with the Borough of Springfield. In 1907, there were only 48 people living in Eatontown; by 1930 its population had grown to 3,000. In 1935, it annexed part of Spring Lake Township and became one municipality with a total land area of . On April 6, 1957, after more than 25 years as an unincorporated community within Union County and 10 years as an independent municipality within Monmouth County under two different governments, Eatontown separated from Monmouth County and became an official city status under the leadership of Mayor Joseph A. Santangelo with full powers to establish ordinances and make decisions governing its own affairs including political representation in the Trenton City Council as well as other municipal functions not delegated unto either government body. A new mayor was elected every year until November 4th 2020 when current Mayor Joseph A Santangelo took office effective January 1st 2021 following his election victory over incumbent Deputy Mayor Gail Fenton on December 15th 2018

Eatontown is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,872 at the 2010 census. It was founded by English settlers in 1814 as a small farming community on the southern tip of Long Island Sound. The name is derived from an Indian word meaning "a place to dwell." The first permanent settler arrived in 1814 and named the community after Sir Thomas Eatont, an English nobleman who had donated land for the settlement. By 1825, however, only about fifty people remained in Eatontown and its development slowed down because of competition from larger towns on Long Island Sound. In 1857, however, the town gained statehood and began to grow rapidly; by 1860 it had reached 25 residents and boasted a school and church. In 1902, while working on his farm near Stillwater Township (now part of Clifton), George Washington Smith decided to move to Eatontown and start a flour mill there. After purchasing 1/3 of a mile (1 km) of white sand beachfront property where he would build his millrace – now known as Smith Beach – Smith built his townhome complex which still stands today. The first store opened in 1903 and soon afterward Smith started selling food products such as flour and cornmeal from his millrace until 1955 when he closed it down due to financial difficulties. Smith's Mill & Market was one of two stores open during World War II; other stores were operated by National Cash Register Corporation before that company went out of business in 1945. At some point during the war period a grocery store also opened but closed within months due to low sales rates compared with larger local supermarkets like Oneida Lake or Jacob's Creek Markets across the river in Paramus NJ . In 1957Eatontown became home to both PSEG Semiconductor Corporation’s new plant manufacturing TTL LEDs [light-emitting diodes] before wound up closing it down within 2 years because they couldn’t keep up with demand for their product line . Today remnants can be seen around Enterprise Rd just south of exit 5 off I-287 northbound heading into NJ Turnpike
Eatontown was founded in 1827 by Nicholas Roebuck, a British-born entrepreneur. The town became an important regional center for the industry of papermaking and printing until the late 19th century. In 1883, Eatontown incorporated as a borough within Bergen County. After years of decline, the borough regained its prosperity during the 1960s and 1970s as a bedroom community for New York City residents commuting to Paramus or Teaneck. However, income levels have declined since then and there is now limited development around the municipally run shopping mall and other businesses.
