The town was founded in 1879 by farmers who came from nearby Trenton. Eatontown became a municipality in 1952, and then an incorporated village in 1960. The name comes from the Dutch word "eet" meaning "to eat." The first store in Eatontown was opened by Elisha Griggs in 1879. At that time it was the only business open in the town. By 1899 there were 10 businesses operating in Eatontown proper and 5 additional businesses scattered throughout the township of Trenton and its environs. In 1952, as part of an effort to attract more business to his fledgling community, Mayor John Jaffe declared that all businesses must have a license to sell food or drinks within their respective walls or face prohibition! The town continued to grow throughout the 20th century, until it reached its peak in the early 1960s when it had a population of over 100,000 people. However, as social unrest increased in New Jersey during that time period, Eatontown began to decline and eventually disappeared from history. Today, only a few remaining buildings remain from earlier days at what is now known as "The Village".
