Elizabeth, New Jersey is a city located in Mercer County, New Jersey. It was founded on December 12, 1764 and named for Elizabeth, the wife of George Washington. As of 2010 it had a population of over 170,000. The city was host to the annual meeting of the United States Congress from 1789 until 1851. In 1868 it became the seat of government for Mercer County, and in 1973 it merged with Camden Township to form a new municipality known as Elizabeth City-Camden Township. In 1784, Benjamin Franklin proposed that all colonial settlers be given land east of the Appalachian Mountains in what is now Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The 1st Earl Howe granted this request and began construction on what would become Elizabethtown (later called Elizabeth). On July 16th, 1785 by order of George Washington he convened a town meeting at which he approved the concept and set out to find investors for the project. The first permanent settler inElizabethtown was John Coxe who arrived on October 10th following an arduous journey from Norfolk Neck under cover of night. The town quickly grew due to its location close to nature as well as its convenient transportation connections including roads leading eastward into Pennsylvania and westward into Delaware Valley towns like Glassboro and Trenton along with points north towards Princeton Junction where goods could be transported downriver to Bordentown or Philadelphia via shipyards on both sides of Broad Street near Market Square (now Rutgers University's Old Campus). By 1800 there were over 100 families living in Elizabethtown while also employed in local businesses such as grist mills, sawmills, taverns, shoe stores and blacksmiths shops catering to travelers coming through their area on their way up or down the Susquehanna River valley or further downstream through Lancaster County toward Harrisburg or Yorktown Heights in Virginia. By 1821 there were 2 schools within Elizabethtown proper: one private school for children between 6-12 years old operated by Reverend James Forbes; second was opened by Governor Nicholas Herrick after his appointment as headmaster/pupil teacher at Trinity School located across from White House on State Street opposite Market Square At various times during its history Elizabethtown has been incorporated as municipalities: 1898 - 1915; 1917 - 1924; 1936 - 1945; 1951 - 1957; 1960 - 1966; 1974 - 1978; 1980 - 1984; 1986 - 1992; 1994 - 1998 Fullerton Borough status until 2000 when it reverted back to City status

After the war he moved to England and became a major general in the British Army. In 1783 he became U.S. President, serving for two terms before returning to America in 1797. During his presidency he repaired relations with Great Britain and solidified U.S.-British alliance against France. In 1801 he re-elected as president and died at Mount Vernon four years later - leaving office with a record of accomplishment that has never been equaled by any other individual in American history
