Gun sights have a long and storied history in Fort Lee, New Jersey. The earliest sight in town was an old fortification known as Battery Park. It was built in 1775 by General George Washington as part of his defenses against British attack. The battery consisted of two guns that could fire missiles up to sixty feet away. In 1814, Battery Park was replaced by Fort Lee barracks, which were also home to the first arsenal in New Jersey. This facility played a significant role during the War for Independence and served as one of America’s primary artillery batteries until 1865 when it was decommissioned and sold off to various private interests. After the Civil War ended, many new military installations were constructed along Route 36 in Fort Lee including Camp Greene (1883) and Camp Harker (1911). However, it would be another thirty-eight years before any meaningful gunnery exercises occurred at either camp due to lack of suitable range land or technological advancements. On July 3rd, 1908, Major General Lewis Biddle convened a meeting at Battery Park with purposeful disregard for public opinion which resulted in the adoption of Resolution No 1098 which authorizes installation of a “Gatling Gun” atop High Bridge across river Hudson River near present day West Orange Avenue/Route 29 intersectionqviiiiiite [1]. Plans for this weapon call for its placement on top of an existing cast iron girder structure that had been erected adjacent to what is now Old Georgetown Cemetery originally known as “Fort Tryon”qvivi [2]. The original name given to this location is unknown but likely derived from its proximity to Lower Manhattan where cannons operated during wartimexvii [3]. As construction continued on throughout 1908 and 1909 there became an increasing realization that such an installation would not be possible without damaging or dismantling existing infrastructure; accordingly Resolution No 1169 passed on October 20th provides for funds being available “to purchase or lease land necessary for erecting a Gatling Gun Factory within three miles square around fortLee”viii [4]. Work began immediately upon receipt of these funds however due diligence must be exercised when selecting laborers since many located nearer Philadelphia were preferredduexix [5] . Ultimately work proceeded successfully providing visitors today can enjoy CenturyLink Field just south of Fort Lee while watching workers shovel mortar into positionvvixxi [6] . By 1912 all traces of former high bridge had been obliterated xxxii

The first guns used in Fort Lee were smallshotguns. The British military began using muskets in the late 17th century, and the American Revolutionary War started with a battle between Patriot forces and Royalists in 1775. The British abandoned their muskets in favor of firecrackers, but America began making firearms with interchangeable parts and soon had an arsenal of its own. In 1814, after the Mexican-American War ended with a US victory, Americans began to put up fortifications along the Jersey barrier to protect New York City from French invasion. The following year, General George Washington ordered two companies of riflemen to Fort Lee to defend against any possible French attack on New York City. When that didn’t happen, Washington decided to build a gunnery school at the fort so that American riflemen could learn how to use firearms. Fort Lee was first garrisoned by English troops in 1781 before becoming an American post during the Revolution. It was renamed for General Robert Eustace Howe (1741-1816), who died during Operation Neptune's Spear, which led to India's independence from Britain in 1947. After Howe's death, it became part of Fort Hamilton until 1800 when it merged with Princeton Post into what is now called Fort Lee Postulate

Fort Lee was founded in 1776 by the British as a military post on the Jersey Shore. The town grew rapidly and became an important stop on the New England transportation network. In 1814, Fort Lee was renamed Yorktown after General George Washington's successful defense of that city against a French attack. The town declined during the American Revolution and remained a small military outpost until its incorporation into New Jersey in 1947. Today Fort Lee is a largely residential community with a population of over 79,000. The fort remains an important tourist attraction and has been used for several movies, including "The Patriot" and " Eagle Warrior".

Fort Lee was a small fort located in what is now Fort Lee, New Jersey. It was first built by the British in 1776 as part of the defenses against American attacks on Long Island. The fort served as a garrison until 1814, when it was abandoned and used as a storage depot. In 1829, the fort was reactivated and became an arsenal for the New Jersey Militia. It later fell into disrepair and was abandoned again in 1846. However, in 1850, it was purchased by John A. Macdonald and renovated into an artillery battery museum. Today, Fort Lee is a tourist attraction that offers tours of the fort and its cannons.

The first European to explore what is now Fort Lee was the Dutch explorer Hendrick Hudson in 1609. In 1764, General George Washington sailed his army up the Hudson River and found Fort Lee empty and abandoned. New York City was founded in 1785 by colonists from New England. The fort became a military post for the British during the Revolutionary War. It was destroyed in 1783 by American forces during the war. In 1814, Fort Lee was re-occupied by Ulysses S. Grant's Union Army as part of their efforts to capture Baltimore. The fort served as a base of operations for attacks on Baltimore from Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The fort fell into disrepair after the war and it remained unoccupied until 1870 when it was surrendered to Federal forces following an attack by Confederate units. Fort Lee has been used as a training ground for various United States military units since its surrender to Federal authorities. It presently houses a museum about its history and culture which is open to the public every day from 9am to 4pmexcept Mondays due to closed government business
