Freehold, New Jersey is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,724 at the 2010 census. The borough was formed on November 3, 1814 from part of Rahway Township. It was once named after the Monmouthshire town of Freehold (now called Hatfield), England. The first Europeans to visit what is now Freehold were Dutch traders in 1609 and 1610 who conducted trade with the Lenape Indians along the Passaic River. French traders also passed through Freehold during this time period. On October 14, 1814, two days after the signing of the Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolutionary War, freeholders of Rahway Township voted to create a new borough by ordinance entitled "Freehold Borough." The name "Freehold" originated from an incident where General Washington journeyed through Rahway on his way back to Morristown after successfully defeating British troops at Saratoga Springs on October 12th that year. He stopped at a small hamlet near present-day Freehold and ordered all its residents to leave because they were not under American rule and were living in allegiance to Great Britain. According to history books written in the early 20th century, it was not until January 1st 1815 that power moved from Philadelphia to Bergen County when Act No. 9 of 1815 created county government within Bergen County and gave individual townships their own justices or constables - an event known as Township Meeting Day. On this day commissioners from Rahway Township met with those from nearby West Orange and East Rutherford in order to set boundaries for future township elections which would take place every three years instead of annually like those that had been held previously. In February 1865, following the gold rush in California and Nevada bringing hordes of men into western New Jersey during that decade for jobsearing opportunities such as mining or prospecting; many people decided to move westward into Bergen County seeking fuller employment opportunities thereby creating what is now known as suburbanization or migration away from rural areas towards commercial centers across America throughout much of late 19th century – including Freehold where land values had exploded following successful manufacturing strikes throughout much of eastern Pennsylvania during this time period resulting in unprecedented wealth creation for some while reducing poverty rates among working class Americans across entire Northeast region – especially Menlo Park (then Highlands) due largely humble origins whence many families migrated there beginning in 1850s seeking better economic prospects than what they had experienced back home despite earlier difficulties faced by these community during era characterized as “the great depression” Of course since then there have been countless waves both positive and negative arrivals/ departures resulting variously dubbed “Newjersey” over ensuing decades reflecting largely changing social mores & values etc etc etc but no matter how itemized or detailed such considerations may be; one thing remains quite certain: over generations many families have continued migrating eastward into NJ regardless efforts by successive state legislatures (& recent mayoral administrations)Apparently unaware that relatively few if any newcomers actually settle permanently within their original communities rather returning home again multiple times over succeeding decades despite numerous admonishments/warnings; most freeholders apparently still act & think alike essentially oblivious comparative newcomer demographic realities having little real impact whatsoever upon daily life experience enjoyed by vast majority residing here today

As one of the most severely damaged communities in NJ during Hurricane Sandy damage hemside-up events such as “FEMA’s Superfund Clean-Up Day” were held throughout December 2013 to help raise money for restoration efforts which have already begun including demolition or reconstruction of dozens of homes following storm damage caused by Sandy One popular tourist destination is Golf Links at Monmouth Park which offers beautiful views across Atlantic City Harbor towards Long Island Sound

Freehold Township was founded by the Dutch in 1626. The first settler in Freehold was Pieter van der Velde, who arrived in 1627. The township was named for a man called Freeland, who died in 1584. The first structure built within the township were two small cottages, which were known as the "Fruit Orchard." In 1776, when New Jersey became a part of the United States of America, Freehold became one of its original twelve townships.
