Freehold is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough's population was 10,898. The name "Freehold" comes from an ancient English estate where the land was undivided and sold without payment to its holder. The first European settlers in what is now Freehold were Dutch in 1624 and 1625. In 1764, George Washington founded Germantown on the lands that became Freehold Township. The township was formed from part of Monmouth Township on February 14, 1814. On April 1, 1828, Freehold Borough was established as a result of a merger of five townships: Allerton (formed December 12th, 1795), Bergenfield (September 15th 1800), Corydon (April 26th 1802), East Brunswick (March 13th 1830), and West Brunswick (February 24th 1835). In 1850 Freehold had a population of 975; by 1910 it had grown to 2,463. It experienced rapid growth during World War II with its participation in the munitions production plants at Maywood and Trenton. In 1949 Freehold elected Mayor Harry Jaffe who served until his death in 1951. During his time as mayor many important services were introduced into town government including establishing zoning ordinances which still guide development today; creating street directories; setting up Municipal Utilities district which provides essential services such as water and trash collection; creating a school board; developing regulations for building permits including regulations for setback requirements; providing funding for parks and playgrounds; sponsoring various civic events such as carnivals and road shows

Freehold was a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 14,876 at the 2000 census. It is now part of the Newark–Troy Township area of Newark. The first Europeans to visit what is now Freehold were Dutch traders in 1624. In 1714, Samuel Morris and his brother-in-law John Stevens founded a ferryboat service from Perth Amboy across the Delaware River to freeholders on Long Beach Island. From this service, they developed a trade with the Indians along the riverbanks and became known as "The Old Trenton Company." In 1727, George Washington visited Freehold for three days while he was campaigning against Robert Ewing in Monmouth County. When he returned home he ordered that all goods transported overland from Philadelphia be unloaded at the mouth of the Delaware River at Perth Amboy before being carted inland by wagon train and then burned there by order of Lord Loudoun. This event helped start efforts to develop Freehold into an agricultural center during the American Revolution. In 1851, Peter Ketchum organized what would become Jersey Central Railroad (JCR) through present-day Freehold Township into four divisions: North division; South division; East division; and West division. JCR opened its tracks through Freehold on November 3, 1851, making it one of the first railroads in America to do so. During World War II, much of Freehold's infrastructure was destroyed by bombing raids from Nazi Germany including many homes and churches which lie today among remains of Liberty Bridge Road and other bridges destroyed during that time frame as well as damage done to schools within town limits such as Plainsboro High School which stands today adjacent to Route 9 southbound between Spring Lake Road/Route 628 eastbound (now Route 818 southbound) and Maplewood Avenue northbound near Interstate 78). Some structures still standing are Presbyterian Church (built 1922), First Baptist Church (1926), Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (1929), Holy Trinity CatholicChurch--Anglican( Built 1936), Methodist EpiscopalChurch--Methodist( Built 1940), Zion Evangelical LutheranChurch(Built 1949). Many other residences also lay demolished or damaged including: Southern Methodist EpiscopalChurch--Methodist( built 1928); Presbyterian Parish Hall (built 1915); Post Office Annex Building--Jersey Telephone Company Warehouse 1926-(now home of NJ Transit Regional Rail Operations Station located just east off I-78 exit ramp off Rte 9 southbound) ; Allendale Ave.--Allendale Shopping Center built 1946; Rankin Ave.--Rankin Avenue Business District built 1954; Elmhurst Rd.--Elsie Drive business district build 1951-1960s; White Sands Rd.--White Sands Rd.-Allendale Ave./Rankin Ave Business District built 1961-. Many farms were lost during this time due to lack of post office box addresses available or damage caused bybombing raids which completely consumed these properties leaving nothing standing save ruins occasionally yielding material for rebuilding purposes when possible sinceataverage had been attained after some years elapsed following war cessation however most such rebuildings have not taken place because no new residents have moved into these areas since then although some limited redevelopment has occurred around Spring Lake Road intersection - all commercial development having stopped abruptly due to lack oresand access nearby
The first thing to happen on the site of what is now Freehold was the construction of a small town, known as East Amboy. The town was built to serve as a military post for troops stationed in and around New Jersey. It was also used as an agricultural center and served as a stop on the New Jersey Railroad. In 1876, the Freehold Township Board decided to incorporate as a municipality. On July 1, 1876, Freehold became part of Bergen County. The first mayor of Freehold was George Prentice. Freehold grew quickly due to its location and natural resources. In 1932, it annexed the neighboring towns of Highland Park and Cedar Cliff. In 1937, it annexed Asbury Park and created the borough of Asbury Park-Freehold which still exists today within Bergen County government boundaries
