Gloucester City (formerly Gloucester, New Jersey) is a city in and the county seat of Gloucester County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. At its peak in 1881, Gloucester City had a population of 1,814. It is located on the Delaware River between Camden and Newark. The first European explorers to visit what is now Gloucester City were Giovanni Battista Delmonte and his nephew Amerigo Vespucci in the 1540s. In 1664, William Penn founded Plymouth Colony in present-day Delaware County; however, no permanent European settlement was established until 1681 when French captain Samuel de Champlain arrived with 450 settlers from Quebec to purchase land along the Delaware River for £5 per acre (1/4 share). On July 25 of that year, this group numbered 102 males under 24 years old and 38 females under 24 years old; they named their new town "Gloucester". In 1701–02 John Mason built a small wharf on the river's east side for trade with France which became known as Mason's Wharf. By 1709 it had become an important shipping point due to its location on the Trenton-Philadelphia canal system. The town rapidly grew during this time with white male migration from eastern Europe (primarily Poland), increase in industry due to railroads arriving after Confederation in 1867 and development of nightlife by immigrants who came seeking work during prohibition era. However, by 1830 most residents were Polish or Italian-American farmers living near factories while blacks constituted only 2% of total population then and only 10% percent today according to2010 Census figures During World War IImuch of what makes Gloucester City an attractive place for families was destroyed: many homes were burned down or damage caused by aerial bombardment including extensive bombing raids that took place over downtown on December 6th 1945 as part of Operation Crossroads which targeted all German military installations within 150 miles radius including munitions storage facilities at Demuth Park Arsenal housing up to 12 million rounds of ammunition making it one of largest air raids against Germany ever conducted . All but three blocks north and south of Main Street were completely leveled including Stroud's grocery store where fire consumed all seven stories before crashing through roof into basement providing some measureof safety for shoppers parachuteing out early morning onto Synonymous Avenue below just feet from raging inferno….. One resident recalled being awakened Wednesday morningat 4amby “a loud noise like an earthquake”followed by “the roar”of flames so large he could not open his door because it would have fallen off its hinges . Afterimages still haunt residents who recall watching mercury vapor burn off hands as firefighters reached high above them searching desperately for survivors…… Most notable among those lost was firefighter Bill Forster whose home sustained major damage but remain standing today across Synonymous Avenue from where he used his helicopter rescuing people trapped inside ..... These images are reminders that we cannot forget how our community has come back together following devastating events

Gloucester City, New Jersey is a city in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 33,471 at the 2010 census. As of the 2016 American Community Survey estimate, the population was 35,095. Gloucester City has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 2,000 years and is one of only two U.S. cities to be founded by Europeans (the other being Philadelphia). The town was established on October 3, 1764 as part of what would become Middlesex County. It became an incorporated municipality on February 14th 1830. On November 5th 1802 it passed a resolution providing for incorporation as a city with a population of 25 thousand within five years. The first mayor was John Pemberton and the first councilmember were George Wayland and James Waddell. The original millrace that ran through Gloucester City served as a major transportation artery for goods arriving from inland via boat or land route to Bordentown and Philadelphia until it was destroyed by flooding in 1865 which left behind extensive damage including loss of many homes and businesses including the mills themselves which continued operated until they were taken down in 1875 by order of Governor Morrisondale due to their high water marks; however some evidence suggests that these mills may have been built before 1865 even though no records exist to support this claim Despite having lost its main business engine during the flood damage era Gloucester City managed to maintain its stature as an important center for culture and education throughout much of its history despite various setbacks; notably when in 1899 it experienced one of America's most famous urban riots when angry white residents took control of several blocks near downtown after successfully protesting against racial discrimination there In recent decades GloucesterCity has seen rapid growth with new development taking place along both its waterfronts as well as off-shore islands located just offshore from town limits - resulting in increased congestion on main streets throughout the city limit but also creating opportunities for more mixed use development adjacent to riverfront properties
The Gloucester City, New Jersey area was first settled in the late 17th century. The area now includes the city of Gloucester and portions of Middlesex County. The population peaked at 20,000 in 1860, but has declined since then.
