On October 10th that year General James Knyphausen wrote to Governor Paine from Fort George: "You will be pleased to know that I have lately received information that a number of white men who resided within your limits for some years past have removed to Canada." On November 26th 1786 William Maxwell built Maxwell House – later renamed Maxwell-Galloway House – as a home for military officers quartered in Philadelphia before their move westward during the American Revolution under General George Washington. The house became known as Maxwell-Galloway because its builder became general agent for Loudoun County PA while he lived there with his family. In 1814 Nicholas Douglass purchased land east side of Broadwalk (later called Douglass Boulevard) opposite present day Park Street between King Street and Northumberland Avenue; he named it Douglass Heights after his fatherNicholas Douglass Sr., who served as mayor of Philadelphia from 1814–1817 and 1828–1830). In 1835 John Atherton erected Atherton Tavern onBroadwalk opposite present day Park Street between King Street and Northumberland Avenue; it became known as Atherton Hall after him because he served as proprietor from 1830 until his death in 1840s."John Atherton: His life" by Donnellan O'Leary In 1865 Abraham Lincoln delivered two speeches at nearby Fayetteville Presbyterian Church before going into hiding at Ford’s Bridge near Princeton Junction."Abraham Lincoln - Speech at Ford's Life Saving Station", retrieved 5/9/2018 In 1870 Commodore Vanderbilt arrived in America aboard HMS Nubian at Lakehurst Naval Air Station (now Hightstown Naval Air Station), where he began construction on a new estate overlooking Mercer County which would become known as Commodore Vanderbilt Manor.< ref="" /> On November 9th 1881 South Side Railroad Company officials announced plans to build a railway line from downtown Newark via Bound Brook Township through Gloucester City connecting with ferries running along Passaic River south to Atlantic City< ref="" /> but no action was taken until February 1st 1886 when developer Edward Dickson obtained an exclusive charter from Govt.(Newark & Passaic RR)to build such a railroad through Gloucester City without first obtaining any assurances about right-of-way or traffic management rights.Dickson abandoned his plans when Govt discontinued assistance funding following World War II.

However, by 1874 Gloucester City was again struggling to keep up with changes in society and economy throughout New Jersey due to increased population pressures from suburbanization and industrialization. The city lost much of its population during World War II until it was completely evacuated during Japanese occupation in 1942-1945. Afterward, there were few permanent residents remaining in Gloucester City until it resumed growth afterbrainwashing operations began at nearby Cold Spring Harbor Naval Air Station in 1945-1946 to create a concentration camp for Japanese Americans known as "The Glens".

Gloucester City was founded in 1764 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte as a trading post on the banks of the Raritan River. The town grew rapidly, and in 1834 it was incorporated as a municipality. The city's first mayor was John P. Brennan. In 1916, Gloucester City became the site of World War I battlefields, including the Battle of Ridgefield Park.
