Hawthorne, New Jersey is an unincorporated community located in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. It was formed as a result of the merger of two small communities, Hawthorne and Red Bank. Hawthorne has a population of about 350 people. The majority of the residents are natives of India who arrived on visas in the early 20th century and took up farming and fishing traditions. A few hundred more people from all over New Jersey settled during the 1940s with the help of Operation Wetlands which relocated thousands of families from predominantly rural areas in eastern Pennsylvania to area townships in Bucks County. Most recent waves have been made up of Italian-Americans who migrated after World War II when large portions of Italy were liberated from Axis occupation. The original post office at Hawthorne opened on May 24, 1875, under the name Red Bank Station (later renamed Hawthorne). Afternoon mail was served until 1907 when it became part of Newark. The first postmaster was A.C. Shepherd (1877-81). In 1911, there were only 10 residents; by 1922 there had grown to 100; by 1929 there were 300; by 1935 there were 400 and by 1946 there were 600 residents with its own ZIP code. By 1958 Hawthorne had reached its current size with 1,500 residents living within a radius around 3 miles around town center while still using Newark common carrier services for both mail and deliveries to addresses outlying areas including what is now West Windsor Township (northwest corner), Nuttingstown Borough (southwest corner), East Brunswick Borough ( southeast corner) and Rahway Township (southwest corner). Postmasters have included Mrs. Gertrude Hinton since 1959 until her retirement in 1984 followed by Mr., Maurice Jaffe from 1984-1992 then finally Lloyd Kappelbach from 1992-2001 In recent years many businesses have closed down due to competition from online retailers or other changes in market conditions such as consolidation or technological advances that make it easier for consumers to purchase products online without having to visit physical stores where prices may be higher

Hawthorne is a small town in Clinton County, New Jersey, United States. It was founded in 1798 and named for the nearby Hawthorne Hill. The population was 773 at the 2010 census. Hawthorne is located on the border of Clinton and Mercer Counties, east of Newark and north of Elizabethtown. According to the United States Census Bureau, it has a total area of , all land. The only water source is a creek that flows through the town. The first settlers in Hawthorne were farmers who came from New York City in 1798. They cleared land and built homes around what is now Hawthorne Hill. In 1812, they changed their name to Hawthorne after John Quincy Adams, then America's first president (1801-1825). The main reason for choosing this name was because it sounded like "a beautiful clearing inhospitable to men." In 1814, when President James K. Polk made his visit to New Jersey, he stopped at Hawthorne Hill and took part in a meeting with local representatives about plans for developing the area into a town. Afterward, he ordered Postmaster General Stephen Mather to start sending mail from there instead of from Newark as usual because he thought that would make Hawthorne more developed and attractive to residents. The first post office was established at Hawthorne on July 9, 1815; it operated until 1899. In 1830, when NH 8 became route 1 through Clinton County (later renamed I-95), some residents decided that they wanted their own courthouse so they built one on Main Street near where today's Second Avenue meets Route 1A south of town limits - still called "the Square". That building still stands; it houses the Village Board today. When I-95 was realigned in 1972, parts of Hawthornes borders shifted along with it - including most of Highway 8 which now runs concurrent with US 202 just east of town limits but remains entirely within township boundaries (and under separate development jurisdiction). As such much recent housing developments have taken place adjacent or inside township boundaries rather than along either roadside rural arterial road which had been their original intent...Today many people think about 'Thornwood' as if it once truly WAS an unincorporated community surrounded by undeveloped farmland

Hawthorne is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. The name "Hawthorne" comes from an Indian word meaning "thethorn." The first settler in Hawthorne was Nicholas Hawthorne, who arrived in 1784 and built a house on what is now Delaware Avenue. His wife, Sarah Hutchinson, also founded Hawthorne Academy (now known as Morristown High School) in 1814. Nathaniel Green and his brother Samuel moved to Hawthorne from Middletown Township in 1798 and established Green's Tavern there. In 1803, John Morse moved to Hawthorne from Easton and started the first post office in the township. In 1814, Jonathan Allen bought 1/2 acre (0.50 km²) of land on Delaware Avenue for $100 from Nicholas Hawthorne. He named it Allen's Grove after himself and erected a gristmill therein that year. In 1825 he sold his holdings to trustees of Morristown Academy for use as a school ground; the trustees later renamed it Morristown High School1). Around this time too much valuable real estate began to be developed around town so Jonathan Allen decided to sell most of his holdings back again along with some other improvements which included: erecting shops and residences on Main Street between Broad Street and Second Street; building two churches - one Protestant (First Baptist), one Roman Catholic - between 21st St., 2nd Ave., 3rd St., 4th Ave., 5th Ave.; founding four schools including one for girls - Haworth Elementary School; establishing two Masonic lodges – Lodge No 818 (now known as Hiram Lodge #818)3); opening up farmland east of townline leading upriver towards Hackensack3). This property became known as Park Row4). By 1830s- 1840s all but three buildings were demolished or abandoned when farming methods changed or new transportation opportunities arose such as railroads4): One exception was Mrs Fenton’s Store which still stands today on 9TH ST & Hwy 22 located near interchange with I-95/US 415
