Kearny is one of nine towns in Burlington County and is part of the Princeton-Easton-Middletown Combined Statistical Area. Kearny was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1664. It became an incorporated town on March 20, 1875. The townships of Easton and Middletown were formed from portions of Kearny Township on October 14, 1868. The city of Princeton was founded on December 3, 1876 and included parts of both Easton Township and Middletown Township as well as much of what is now Kearny Township. On January 1, 1981, all but a small part of Kearney Township was transferred to Bernardsville Borough while the rest continued to be assigned to Princeton City until its merger with Bernardsville on November 30, 2007. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , including , or 0.92% of land; it has no river or bay surroundings like those found in other municipalities within Burlington County which make up most of the county's surface area (the exceptions being Englewood Cliffs Park and Wild Wood). The township's boundaries were changed several times during its history: In 1915 they were extended eastward along Pine Street past Princeton University so that it would touch both sides of I-95; in 1928 they were reduced again so that only half the township would be within their current borders; finally in 2007 they were completely reorganized into nineteen individual boroughs which cover an area larger than either Easton or MiddletownTownships combined... In all likelihood there are more places within Kearney Township not currently covered by any borough that have yet to be counted because historical boundaries have beenchanged multiple times by various municipalities without any real effort to preserve them - this could easily lead to a underestimate if done blindly!
