Lodi is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the town had a population of 21,898. The name "Lodi" is from the Lenape language and means "place where sweet potatoes grow." The first Europeans to visit Lodi were some Dutch colonists who came in 1638. In 1764, British troops burned down the village to prevent it from being taken over by the French. In 1814, Lodi became part of Bergen Township and was incorporated as a borough on October 15th of that year. On February 14th 1835, Lodi became an independent township when it was combined with West Milford Township to form Hunterdon County. The townships were disbanded on April 1st 1846 and their lands divided among the individual townships. On January 1st 1860, Lodi was reincorporated as a city under the terms of an act of Congress approved on May 5th that year. The original boundaries for Lodi were south-southwest corner of Milford Township and north-northwest corner of Union Township; these boundaries are still used today but are slightly different due to annexation by Whippany in 1922 which results in its own town named after it - Lodi Borough (renamed Northvale Borough in 2002). From July 2nd until September 30th 1955 there was also a small event known as "Lodi's 50 Year Jubilee". It commemorated fifty years since incorporation into Hunterdon County as well as 50 years since American independence from Great Britain. On July 3rd 1966, Mayor John Fenton announced plans for an expressway through downtown which would have ended at Route 9 near Exit 11A southbound and been concurrent with Interstate 95 eastbound. This proposal was never completed but has been mentioned occasionally in local news media over time without any definitive action being taken.
