Middlesex, New Jersey was originally settled by English colonists in the early 17th century. The area now known as Middlesex was included in the Province of New Jersey in 1664 and became part of the United States of America in 1776. In 1802, Middlesex became part of the newly formed township of East Brunswick,NJ. One year later, it merged with neighboring township of North Brunswick to form a new municipality called "Middlesex". In 1845, Middlesex became a borough within New Jersey. On October 15th, 1905, it amalgamated with Paramus and Lindenwood to form the new borough of Paramus-Lindenwood. On January 1st, 1958, this merger also resulted in the addition of West Nyack to the municipality. On November 3rd, 2002, all municipalities within Middlesex were combined into one single entity under the name "Middlesex Township". The history and culture of MiddlesEX is intertwined with that of its surrounding municipalities. Many residents have been born or raised here and continue to live their lives here after moving away for various reasons or retiring. One resident of town who aided General Howe was rewarded with a tract of land that became West Deptford Township in 1802. Inriel McGuire founded McGuiretown Landing on Rahway River near present day Uniondale before 1800, but it was abandoned soon after because of water shortages caused by slides during winter months. A new landing was established on Monmouth Bay in 1806 by Peter Minuit under conditions similar to those at Rahway; however it also failed due to lack of resources and infrastructure at the time. In 1870, Middlesex became one of thirty-six towns in New Jersey included within newly created Essex County based on results of a referendum promoted by Governor John Wagner (D). At firstfocused mainly on agricultural production but gradually began suburbanizing as more people arrived from Great Britain looking for farmland after its destruction during World War II.
