A few months later, on December 8th,1796, George Washington issued another order ordering all citizens to arm themselves with pistols and long guns at home or on military posts (Fowler). Pistol usage increased rapidly during the late 18th century as handguns became more common. In 1812, New Jersey passed a law requiring all citizens over the age of 21 to have at least one gun (Peters). This law also allowed farmers to buy guns for their farms (Peters). By 1837, handguns had become so popular that merchants started selling bullets too (Harrison). The use of bullets transferred from handguns into rifles during the American Revolution because there were no suitable handguns available for use in warfare. Rifles were designed specifically for shooting larger objects such as cannons and horses. The first rifle was built by George Washington in 1792(Fowler). Rifle usage expanded rapidly during the Revolutionary War because it was easier and faster to transport large quantities of ammunition than handguns. Ammunition spread quickly from battlefields into homes because rifles could fire multiple rounds per minute compared to handgun fires which only fired one round per minute(Harrison). In addition, rifles could penetrate targets up to 100 feet away while handguns could only hit targets up to 25 feet away(Fowler/Elliott). After the Revolutionary War ended, small arms development continued until about 1800 when shotguns took over as the preferred firearm choice for hunting deer and other game.(Koopman) Shotguns became more commonly used in war due to their inaccuracy when firing single shots over distances greater than 25 feet due to recoil.(Koopman) Shotguns remain among America’s favorite firearms today thanks largely to their ease-of-use contrasted against Handguns which are often difficult and time consuming To Use And Abuse
