Oakland, New Jersey is a borough located in the United States. The population was 7,864 at the 2010 census. It is part of Essex County and is bordered by Newark to the north and west, Jersey City to the east, Uniontown to the south and east, and Hackensack to the southeast. Oakland’s earliest settlements date back to 1675 when French colonists established a trading post on what is now Blossom Street in what is today's Downtown Oakland. The first volley of gunfire in American history was fired from a cannon ball shot into the ground by British forces stationed there duringthe American Revolution on November 5th, 1776. In 1847, John Sutter founded Sutter’s Fort near what are now Fremont and Harrison Streets in downtown Oakland. Located on fertile land that had beenuninhabited for centuries due to its high hillocks and lack of water resources, Sutter’s Fort became an important military base for California efforts during both World War I (1914-18)and World War II (1939-1945). During World War II, Oakland played host to two U.S. Army Air Forces bases – Alameda Field (later Candlestick Park) in northeast Oakland and MacArthur Airport in downtown – as well as numerous naval airfields including Alameda Naval Air Station (now Jack London National Wildlife Refuge) and Treasure Island Naval Air Station. In 1951, after years of planning by Mayor Elihu Root and County Supervisor Don Waddell, new county courthouse building were constructed on Telegraph Road across from City Hall in Downtown Oakland; this facility served as county government center until 1976 when it was replaced by current county hall building on Center Street which also serves as district office buildings for Essex County residents. Today much of what once constituted Downtown Oakland has been demolition or redevelopment with new housing developments taking over much of central business districts such as Chinatown/The Avenues/Euclid Avenue etc., while most of the remaining older commercial areas have seen modest revival with several small businesses still operating along Telegraph Road corridor between First Avenue & Webster Street between Broadway & Lake Merritt Boulevard since before gentrification began taking hold beginning in late 1990s following major economic successes within city boundaries resulting from dramatic increases intra-city commuting rates due largely to BART expansion plans implemented subsequent thereto throughout various neighborhoods withinOakland thereby leading - via displacement -to increased levels of socio-economic segregation among increasingly affluent white suburban professionals who comprise today's overwhelming majority(90%)ofDowntownOaklanders although African Americans continue constitute approximately 15%ofMayor Schaaf's sworn constituency
