Perth Amboy is part of the Newark-Jersey City, New Jersey Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in Perth Amboy were Dutch and English colonists who arrived in 1664. The name "Perth" comes from the Scots word "porth," meaning "peninsula." The place was originally called Ridgeway because of its deep ravine running through it. The original village consisted of just a few homes and two stores. In 1814, when Perth Amboy became a borough, it had a population of only 100 people. A millinery business was started by Mrs. Overstreet in 1824 and continued until 1865 when it merged with another business to form the Overstreet Manufacturing Company which still exists today as an independent company with over 260 employees across 12 branches throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. From 1830 to 1850, there were five grocery storekeepers in Perth Amboy- four of whom operated continuously for more than 50 years each! In 1870, James Aiken founded the Aiken Cycle Works on Market Street near where he now lives as an author and historian. Here he made bicycles that were very popular in America during the 19th century because they were very sturdy and could be ridden easily without having to be fitted with gears or pedals

Perth Amboy is located on the southern border of Newark and across the river from Elizabethtown. The area now comprising Perth Amboy was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1664. The town's name originated with an Indian word meaning "the place where the Sturgeon grow". The first European to arrive in Perth Amboy was Nicholas Palliser, who arrived on July 14, 1664, as part of the small convoy that included Vice Admiral Sir George Downing and General John Lambert. Palliser named his new settlement after his patron saint: St Andrew de la Courcelle (Andrew of Carteret). English colonists arrived soon thereafter and founded what became known as Perth Amboy Township on April 12, 1667. One of those colonists was Jonathan Davenport; he purchased land from Adam de Vries for $5 per acre ($40 per km²). Davenport made use of a natural harbor on Hackensack River to trade with Native Americans and conduct military campaigns against their opponents – including French forces – during the early 17th century. He also developed agriculture into a significant industry within Perth Amboy Township and helped pioneer what would become known as industrial development in Middlesex County during this time period. In 1783, following the Treaty of Paris which ended the Seven Years' War, British troops burned down many homes in Perth Amboy Township as part of celebrations along Jersey City's Mohawk Trail celebration; this event is often considered to be one of the most destructive riots in North American history. In 1846, when Perth Amboy grew too large for its original township boundaries and became a borough under New Jersey law, it annexed Elizabethtown to its east side before becoming independent again four years later under statehood legislation passed by then-Governor James Buchanan via executive order number 987-1849 (issued without consulting county officials). During much of its history as an incorporated municipality,Elizabethtown faced various challenges including racially segregated housing developments that were built near several white schools while black residents remained largely unserved or unsupported by city services; attempts at annexation by other municipalities over time that met with resistance from local officials; high rates for municipal services compared to surrounding townships; and attempted reclamation by developers who unsuccessfully sought to build upscale suburban neighborhoods within its borders which ultimately led to increased crime rates in Elizabethtown during this time period.
