Plainfield is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,879 at the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous municipality in Middlesex County after Newark. The area that makes up Plainfield was first settled by Germans in 18th century as part of Dunder Mifflin Township. The name "Plainfield" originated from an early Dutch place called "Pleinfeldt", meaning "plain field". In 1764, when New Jersey was founded, it included all of what is now Middlesex County and much of Sussex County. The area that makes up Plainfield became a township on February 14, 1815, from portions of Hunterdon and Morris counties. The modern-day town of Plainfield was formed on April 6, 1847 from the merger of parts of four separate townships: North Plainfield (including the villages of Westwood and East Brunswick), South PlainFIELD (including Rahway and Hazleton), Easton Township (including Bound Brook) and West Trenton Township (including Princeton). On October 15, 1896 – more than two centuries after it had been organized – Plainfields first school opened with grades K-6; it closed in 1957 due to budget cuts necessitated by advancements in transportation technology. On October 15, 1956 – almost fifty years after its incorporation – Plains High School opened as the only high school in plainfield with classes starting at 7 A.M.; it closed on November 30th 1970 due to budgetary problems associated with suburbanization throughout Middlesex County In recent years there has been a move towards downtown development which has led to increased traffic congestion around malls such as Monmouth Mall and Livingston Mall although this has been offset by growth within the core boroughs for housing development including new homes for professionals near Lincoln Financial Plaza which have since brought some relief to traffic congestion along Route 9 southbound between Burlington Avenue and Interstate 95

The town of Plainfield, New Jersey was founded in 1788 by the groups of farmers and traders who had migrated from England. The town quickly became a center for industry and commerce, and its location made it an ideal place to grow tobacco. After the Revolutionary War, Plainfield continued to thrive as a commercial center, growing into a large city by the early 19th century. In 1814, Plainfield became part of the newly formed United States of America and experienced rapid growth in population and economy. Over time, however, Plainfield's economic stability began to unravel due to factors such as scarce land and competition from larger towns. In the late 1800s, Plainfield transitioned from a primarily agricultural community to a suburb of New York City. Today, the town is home to a number of high-rise buildings and few residents remain within its traditional boundaries. Plainfield's history can be traced back to its founding days as a small farming community located on the banks of the Passaic River. Originally called Westhorne after one of its founders, Westhorne soon grew into one of Englishtown's most important villages because it offered easy access to transportation and resources that helped support other settlements in what would become America. By 1788, when plainfields pioneers set out from their homes near Newark on April 12th in search of new land opportunity (the original settler group being led by John Smith), they were following in the footsteps of their ancestors who had come overland from England many years earlier. From this day forward until independence was declared two years later on July 4th (1776), Westhorne served as both capital for New Jersey Governor Nicholas Morris during his initial term before moving onto Elizabethtown where he died less than two months later on August 3rd due largely to illness contracted while performing official duties at Fort George Clinton along with other officials attending his inauguration ceremonies). The journey across open country began like so many others before them: On April 12th Indian scout Enoch Lightfoot spotted what he thought could be fertile land downriver; however since there were no roads or trails available then – or even now – this claim remains unconfirmed as there are no records whatsoever documenting any such visit or settlement attempt undertaken by either team member(s). It would not be until much later that settlers began arriving en masse beginning around September 1st 1788 when word spread through various Englishtown communities about prospective lands upriver which lay between Jameson’s Ferry Dam (northwest corner) upstream from present-day White Marsh Township line - known today only through aerial mapping -and Hackensack Creek which emptied into Passaic River approximately 6 miles eastward at Ramapo Falls near East Brunswick Township Line - also known today only via aerial mapping - making this area one contiguous tract Of valuable watershed propertyFOR THE FIRST TIME EVER AVAILABLE TO NEW JERSEYANS AND THEIR ENGLISH FRIENDS BACK IN CENTRAL NEW YORK STATE! This area laid immediately westward OF WHERE WESTHORNE STANDED TODAY UPON APRIL 12TH ‘87 WHEN THEY SETTLED DOWN IN THAT AREA’S NATIONWIDE PREMIER LAND FOUNDATION WAS BEGAN! As far back as March 2nd 1789 letters were sent home informing family members living locally that goods had been brought overland including flour & meal grounden & pork chops raised fresh daily @4 rods each way but nothing has been found yet proving this story is true...& we do know everyday people hereabouts still go over thither fetching goods etc.-John Doe In order for these men & their families not justto start off again all alone THIS FAR UP RIVER THEY DECIDED TO CREATE A CITY CALL PLAINFIELD UNDER THE NAME OF THEIR FAMILY OUTLOOK AS FAR AS DISTRICT COMMISSIONER WILL SHOW US HOW MUCH GOOD PLAINFIELD DID FOR OUR COUNTY BEFORE WE GOT QUIET ABOUT IT...WE CAN PASS ON THAT INFO TO OUR KIDS NOW IF YOU WANT BUT DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT BEING WRITTEN INTO LAW YET LOL
