The first permanent European settlement in Point Pleasant was founded by Captain John Smith on April 14, 1708 as a trading post between Pennsylvania and New York. The name derived from "Pleasant Valley" located adjacent to the original site of the town. The first store in Point Pleasant opened in 1812 and was run by Samuel Morse and his brother Alfred. The brothers also operated a mill that ground flour for local markets. In 1848, James Whelan bought the store from Samuel Morse and continued to operate it until his death in 1875. In 1851, graziers Jno. Ayer and Hiram Clark formed an agricultural society with donations of land from various individuals including George Wright (the uncle of General George Wright). They began marketing meat products such as haystacks, beef and pork chops aboard their wagons to local farmers and traders throughout central New Jersey. By 1865, they had developed a large marketable acreage around what is now Point Pleasant village limits; this led to their nickname "Grain Kings". In 1860, Robert Morris donated land east of town along Third Street for use as a public square; this eventually became known as Morris Park after him. In 1863, Alfred Pugh erected a small schoolhouse on North Avenue near where today's Veterans Memorial Boulevard crosses under Third Street; this became known as Pugh Elementary School after him. In 1865, William Borland donated land west of town on First Street for use as a military reservation; this eventually became known as Point Pleasant Naval Station after him. In 1896-97or 1899-1900 Jno Davidson built three small stores on Market Place which are still standing: Davidson's Drug Store (1901), Jack Dempsey's Bar & Grill (1902), and Joe's Liquor Emporium (1903). These two buildings are now used asresidential units called Easton Hall/Weston Towers respectively

After the war ended and Washington's troops were disbanded, Point Pleasant reverted to its original name of West Point until it was renamed again in 1922 to honor General James K. Polk after his victory in the Ulysses S. Grant–Jefferson Davis presidential election of 1868. The city boundaries have changed over time; it originally included Easton Township and part of Fair Lawn Township before being divided into those two townships in 1912. In 1990, Point Pleasant annexed parts of neighboring municipalities: Millville which had been part of Easton Township since 1898 and South Hackensack which had been part of Fair Lawn since 1886. As a result, the population now stands at 24,844 people living within its limits while also including portions of both Easton and South Hackensack Townships outside its borders
In 1780, the area that is now Point Pleasant was part of Burlington County. In 1795, it became a part of New Jersey. The first white settlers in Point Pleasant arrived in 1798 and named it after the town of Plymouth in England. They were led by Captain John Stevens and his brother, Isaac Stevens. The Stevens brothers started a small farm on the site where they currently live. In 1802, when Burlington County was created, Point Pleasant became one of its six townships. The first store in Point Pleasant opened on Broad Street in 1813. In 1814, George Washington visited the town and inspected its defenses. He gave its residents an assurance that America would be defended if attacked by France or Spain. In 1820, John D’Arcy McGee built a home on what is now Spring Garden Road to provide shelter foravers who had come over from Pennsylvania during the American Civil War. The house still stands today and is used as a museum by Point Pleasant Historical Society Incorporated. The Township Legislature was established in 1824 and it continued to meet until 1865 when it was replaced by a Borough Council which continued until 1893 whenPoint Pleasant got its own boroughhood charter In 1896, Philadelphia annexed Point Pleasant Boroughs making them one municipality with all points east of Market Street within Philadelphia limits
