Red Bank, New Jersey is a borough located in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 7,880 at the 2010 census. It was founded on October 10, 1817 by Captain John Redbank and his family. The name comes from the color of the sand which is found there. The Red Bank River flows through the borough and its ZIP code is 07609. Red Bank's first post office opened in 1824 and continued to serve until 1848. In 1830, Jno. Redbank built a grist mill on the river bank that still stands today as a commercial property known as Mill Creek Grist & Feeds Inc., now part of Susquehanna University’s agricultural research center. In 1836, Captains John Danko and Nicholas Fenton purchased some land east of town from Ephraim Burr for $4 an acre (0·40 ha). They built what became known as Greenpoint Village on this lot which they named after their home state of New York City where they had been born earlier that year. In 1840-1841, Captains Peter Hickey and Hugh O'Neill purchased land to the north of Greenpoint Village from Andrew Hamilton for $8 per acre (2·10 ha). This area became known as North End because it overlooked Sandy Hook Lake – one of three bodies of water in town (the other two were called South End and West End). This area also served as development ground for later residents when white settlement advanced slowly along both sides of Sandy Hook Bayou towards Lower Township to the east while black settlements developed closer to what is now Borough Park to the west. In 1850-1851 Captain John McCullough bought some more land north of North End from Andrew Hamilton for $16 per acre (4·20 ha), making Red Bank one hundred acres (50ha) in size with a population of about 100 people including 25 men employed by McCullough alone at his sawmill near present day Upper Township Mannheim Avenue and North Street between Easton Avenue and Manheim Road.) The next decade saw dramatic growth due in large part to immigration: two Irishmen named Daniel Whyte arrived from County Wexford in 1852 and soon began work at McCullough's mill; another Irishman named Michael Collins arrived two years later followed by six others between 1854-1855; Polish immigrants Stanislaus Karczmarek arrival followed in 1861; German immigrants Rudolph Pohlmann arriving soon after followed by five others between 1862-1863; Italian immigrants Antonio Signorile arriving in 1865]]. A new school was erected on School Street corneringpresentday Manning Boulevard just south of present day College Avenue during this time period with instruction starting July 1st 1863 under Revd Dr James Mitchell who would remain teacher until 1886 when he was replaced by Revd Dr Arthur Blissett [see photo below]). Reverend Blissett would remain teaching until 1893 when he retired after many years serving students/families headlong into early 20th century industrialization with no endin sight!
