The area now called River Edge was first populated in the early 17th century by Native Americans. The first European to settle in what is now River Edge was Dutchman Hendrick Vliet, who founded a trading post on the Hackensack River in 1675. In 1814, United States citizens James K. Polk and George H.W. Bush landed at Asbury Park to explore possible sites for a new capital of New Jersey. They recommended landing at what is now River Edge because it had been recently abandoned by the indigenous people living there. In 1815, Governor John McLaughlin appointed David Rittenhouse as Surveyor General for New Jersey and he organized a survey team to map out all of the present-day states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. One of the members of this survey team, Captain Samuel Morse, became interested in making a permanent settlement at what is now River Edge because it lay near his homes in Newtown Township (now Reading). He purchased land around what is now river edge from native people and began construction on a small town named after himself – Morse City – in 1817. Morse City quickly became known as one of the most prosperous towns in New Jersey because its merchants were able to get goods delivered quickly and easily to their customers throughout the state. Its location made it an ideal place to conduct business; also, many settlers came looking for easy access to commercial opportunities during this time period. On October 21st 1917 three airplanes piloted by American soldiers crashed into a warehouse on Main Street near where present-day University Avenue meets Route 9 NJ Transit Station; all occupants died instantly due to altitude sickness caused by high explosives used in their bombing missions which were also taking place simultaneously about 10 miles away at Trenton Air Field (now Red Bank Airport). During World War II many residents took up arms against Nazi Germany because they considered them invaders who should be deported back home like all other “foreigners” living in America without proper documentation or rights granted to them such as voting rights or access to education opportunities beneath our Constitution and laws! The River Edge community is located in the Township of Middlesex County, New Jersey. The township was established on November 1, 1814 and named for the edge of the Susquehanna River. The community was originally a small farming village with a population of only 100 people. The village was destroyed by a flood in 1868 and reconstruction began immediately. In 1902, the Pennsylvania Railroad built a line from Trenton to Camden which connected with the Philadelphia and Reading Railway at River Edge. This made River Edge an important transportation center for southeastern New Jersey. In 1912, the Newark–Camden section of the NJY became part of Penn Central Railroad and River Edge became part of that railroad's Newark division. In 1967, both Amtrak and NJ Transit merged into Penn Central Railroad which also included River Edge in its jurisdiction. As a result, Train Station #1 (renamed Elizabethtown Station) became an Amtrak station while Train Station #2 (which continued to be calledriver edge station) became NJ Transit's new terminal for passengers trains heading to or from points east of Camden Yards in Camden City.
