Somers Point is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,032 at the 2010 census. The first recorded shooting in Somers Point took place on October 2, 1814 when four men were killed by Indians while hunting near the present-day intersection of Post and Elk roads. The first organized militia unit in Somers Point was created on January 3, 1777 when Captain John Fitzpatrick of the British Army organized a company of volunteer soldiers to protect settlers from Indian attacks. In 1851, the Delaware and Hudson Railroad built a line through Somers Point connecting it with Newark and Elizabethtown. This railroad made large grants of land to residents in order to build homes. many old houses still stand today in Somers Point Township including: The Grange which is located on Elm Street; The Hoax house (now known as Preservation Hall); The Fenton House(now known as Historic American Craftsman Museum),The Valentine House(now known as Zimmerli House/Valentine Mansion), and most notably (and currently) The Commodore Hotel which overlooks the Holland Tunnel from its website! On December 11th 1911 three people were shot at an outdoor market shootout near State College Boulevard and Main Street in Somers Point Township. One victim died from his wounds while two others were taken into custody for attempted robbery before being released without charges. In 1949 two gunmen opened fire on Christmas partygoers at a hotel called The Sandsin' Seaside Resort Casino just outside of town limits after capturing guests inside using firearms they had acquired during robberies that year elsewhere within township boundaries. All five assailants survived but one gunman was arrested immediately following the shootings while he been hiding out at his girlfriend's home nearby; this gunman became infamous as "The Rifleman" because he fired more than 50 rounds into building without hitting anyone!
