Summit was a town in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is located on the border of Mercer and Warren counties. Summit formed part of the Boundary Waters National Recreation Area. The first settler in what is now Summit was John Broughton in 1781. He built a log cabin onwhat is now called Park Ridge Road. The first post office opened in 1826 and was named for John Broughton, Jr.. In 1838, Stephen Fenton developed a farm on what is now Park Ridge Road which became known as Fenton's Crossing. A Methodist Episcopal church was built there in 1851 and remained in use until 1966 when it burned down. In 1907, Summit got its own newspaper, the "Summit Sentinel". At that time it had a circulation of just five hundred copies but within ten years it had become one of the largest newspapers in New Jersey with a daily circulation of over one thousand copies. In addition to its main news operation, "The Sentinel" also ran an education department, an advertising bureau and various other services including campaign satire and photojournalism under the banner "New Jersey's First News Paper". On July 4th 1937, during World War II, "The Sentinel" published an editorial condemning Adolf Hitler's rise to power globalistically and proposing that all Americans unite against him instead. In 1944 they produced an internal documentary film critical of Nazi Germany entitled "A People’s History: America Under Nazism", which won them numerous awards worldwide both before and after its release.
