Totowa is a small town in New Jersey. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Totowa has a history dating back to 1795 when it was known as Westfield Township. In 1838, it became part of Monmouth County. The name "Totowa" originated from a Native American word meaning "place where many buffalo grazed." One of the most popular tourist attractions in Totowa is the Totowa Lake State Park which offers fishing, boating, swimming, hiking and camping opportunities. There are also several restaurants and stores in town that offer food and drinks for visitors. Additionally, there are several amusement park rides available for visitors to enjoy such as the OTB roller coaster and Splash Mountain. The town was founded by Isaac Nott who arrived here in 1795 from England with his family. He built a gristmill on what is now North Main Street in 1802 and started growing corn and other crops. By 1835, he had three sawmills working simultaneously providing lumber for local homes and businesses until he discontinued operations in 1856 due to poor health. In 1865, Totowa became part of the newly formed Ocean County when Monmouth County merged with Essex County (now Middlesex County). In 1925, Totoville Post Office opened along with other post offices within Ocean County including Brick City (later Clifton), East Brunswick (later Edison), Little Egg Harbor (later Middletown), Rahway Junction (later Rahway) and Woodbridge Cornering Station (later Newton). At this time monochrome postal service began operation across all counties within New Jersey so all towns were given one color stamp - orange-colored stamps were used for everything except tax assessment notices which were green-colored stamps until 1978 when red replaced orange as county colors because of TV channel allocations). It wasn't until 1978 that black ink replaced white on all post office windows following an order from then Governor James Egan during his first term as Governor of New Jersey based on recommendations from then Commissioner Edward Jenssen who felt that these outdated practices would detract from overall tourism promotion efforts statewide.. Totowa is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,865 at the 2010 census. The first mention of Totowa is from 1735 and it was not until 1813 that it became a township. In 1873, Totowa merged with Maywood Township to form the borough of Maywood. Borough status was abolished in 1976 and Totowa reverted back to its township form. The population increased to 12,558 in 2000 and 13,815 in 2010; the increase was due largely to migration from nearby Paramus and Englewoodcliffs boroughs. The town of Totowa was laid out on March 4, 1735 by Nicholas Wisniewski as part of the western boundary of what would become Bergen County. On October 11, 1813, following an act by the New Jersey Legislature which created Bergen County, Totowa became a part thereof with a vote of 5-1 votes. At its incorporation date on January 1st 1873 (following passage of an act by the New Jersey General Assembly), Totowa had a population of 605 residents. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2002 American Community Survey conducted among all households in Bergen County (population density = 709 people per square mile [231/km²]), Totowa's racial makeup included 66% White alone or almost all white; 0% African American; 8% Native American; 2% Asian Pacific Islander; 3% from other races; 10% Hispanic or Latinoof any race were also living there then (this figure does not include those who identify as both Hispanic or Latino and white). As reported by the NJ Advance Media staff lifestyles data for 2000 shows that non-Hispanic whites make up about 60 percent now while Hispanics have made up only about 20 percent since then...the percentage black residents has decreased significantly over this time frame from nearly 30 percent pre-2000 to less than 10 percent now... According to government figures released today through 2017 - including counts for both Township Population censuses taken prior thereto as well as updated ACS data through September 2017 - totowans are still majority white despite significant minority representation today outside Of Township limits
Totowa was founded in 1724 by Dutch settlers. The town was named for the Totowa River, which formed the boundary between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The first settler in Totowa was Nicholas Vosburgh, who arrived in 1724. In 1735, a post office was established at Totowa, and remained in operation until 1876.
