In the year 1814, a group of men led by John Stevens founded West New York in what is now northern New Jersey. The town was named for the west side of Manhattan which at that time included all of modern-day Hudson County and much of upstate New York. The first settler in the new town was Capt. George Washington Goodale who arrived on October 15th, 1814. When Fort George was built to protect the town, Goodale donated land for it and purchased a cannon from Chief Justice Marshall. West New York was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland from 1624 to 1664. The area became part of the British colony of Nova Scotia in 1763, and then the United States in 1783. When West New York became a city on February 14, 1898, it was one of the original 10 municipalities in New York City.
