Westwood is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,090 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by English settlers in 1764 as Westwood Plantation. The name originated from the village of Weston near London and was anglicized to "Westwood" in 1812. The original land grant for Westwood came from Sir John Moore in 1764. It lay northwest of Newark and southeast of Camden on what are now State Route 9 and Post Road (now West Side Highway). In 1802, President James K. Polk ordered General George Washington to move his army eastward along the Paterson-Princeton line so that it could winter at Morristown instead of Philadelphia; this forced William Thornton to grant more land upriver to make way for Washington's army. In 1868, Congressman Nicholas Scranton proposed that west side sections of New Brunswick Township be split off from Middlesex County and annexed into Westwood; but this proposal met with opposition from residents on the east side who were concerned about becoming a suburb of Newark or a city within their own borders. In 1871, Scranton again recommended annexation but this time he received unanimous support from both houses of the state Legislature before being passed into law by Governor Andrew Johnson on April 25th. With incorporation complete, west side sections of New Brunswick Township (northwest corner until present day) became part of Westwood while northeast section became part of Philipsburg Township; all other eastern portions remained within Middlesex County until 1978 when they were merged into Camden-Wilmington as part of the new metropolitan area). Today, west wood retains its rural feel with numerous farms stretching across many blocks including several miles along Interstate 95 outside its borders which give rise to its nickname "The Green Mile". After World War II ended, many businesses shut down because of high taxes levied by the newly created United States government as part of The Marshall Plan. Businesses reopened after a while but prices have since increased significantly because of all the recent economic changes going on throughout the world.
