Albuquerque was the original capital of New Mexico. It was founded in 1785 by Spain and its first governor, Manuel de la Garza, who arrived with a small force to create a new Mexican colony. In 1847, the United States acquired New Mexico from Spain as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1846, after Mexican forces attacked U.S. territory in Arizona, Santa Fe Mayor James Wolkomir decreed that Albuquerque should be the capital of New Mexico because it had been 9 years since San Miguel County had become an independent Territory. On January 6, 1847, Wolkomir designated Albuquerque as the provisional capital of New Mexico when he presented a petition to Congress asking for this designation. A year later on February 14th, 1848 Congress passed legislation designating Albuquerque as the permanent capital of New Mexico under two conditions: 1) that new statehood be granted to all of southern Texas; 2) that Territorial Legislature pass ordinances providing for municipal government within city limits only instead of statewide). On February 21st President James K Polk approved these provisions and declared that Albuquerque would become the “central point” throughout NewMexico due to its location at the crossroads between American Southwest and Mexican North America On November 16th 1907 Avenue A in downtown Albuquerque was dedicated as Boulevard Mesa del Norte which followed what is now US-61 south from Old Town Plaza until it reached I-25 east near Sunnyside Park
