Lovington was a small town in New Mexico when it got its first binoculars. The town's founder, John S. Loving, bought the first set of binoculars in 1887 and used them to watch the birth of his son. By 1899, Lovington had two businesses - a store and a blacksmith - and enough money to buy another set of binoculars. In 1902, Lovington voted to make their own currency - the "Lovington Gold Dollar" - which remained in circulation until 1907. Between 1892 and 1907, Lovington had four schools; two for children up to age 16 and two for students from ages 17 through 24. In 1908, Jameson Wray opened the first Western lens shop in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Wray became one of the most successful lens dealers in America thanks to his ability to find good deals on new lenses while also selling old lenses back into use as part of his "Wray-Binocular Sales." From 1912 until 1916, Lovekin Ewing ran a photography business here in Lovington that soon became well known throughout New Mexico for its high-quality prints depicting Native American life (including Navajo pottery). In 1923, Edwin Hubble wrote about how he usedbinoculars during his time working at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center: "I frequently observed objects too faint or too far away for me even with my amateur instruments to see plainly... With my Binoculars I could study any object placed within certain limits at any position on Earth." In 1954, when astronomy professor Dr. Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto after conducting an observing campaign from Haleakala Observatory on Maui (the only country permanently located near Pluto), local residents organized a parade led by Tombaugh himself down Main Street towards Haleakala Observatory where he displayed his findings using binoculars! After this event, locals began calling Pluto "Pluto" rather than just "naʻa levitating rock". During World War II (1939-1945), many people worked at military bases located near Albuquerque; these workers took advantage of nearby astronomical opportunities such as clear skies during wartime so they could photograph targets without having to worry about enemy fire interfering with their observations. As war continued unabated throughout 1945 and 1946 (), many people turned their attention towards finding new planets that may have been missed by our current telescopes due to lack of funding or technology at the time... eventually leading astronomers like Edwin Hubble to discover more planets beyond our solar system!
