Portales, New Mexico is a small town in the Mexican state of Pinal. It is located just south of the Arizona border and east of Tucson. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Portales was Father Francisco García de la Cueva on July 11, 1536. A mission was built here in 1798 by Father Antonio López de Santa Anna and named San Bernardino de Padua after his patron saint. In 1827, when Pinal County was created from parts of Cochise and Apache counties, Portales became part of it. In 1898, during the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920), General Agustín Buenaventura y Costilla led an attack against Fort Huachuca at Portales. He also attacked Los Angeles Mission in nearby Sahuaritos and destroyed several buildings there before withdrawing back to Mexicali. In 1912, Manuel Antonio Ruiz y Gascón organized a group called "Cruzadas del Norte" which fought against Porfirio Díaz's dictatorship in what is known as the Battle of Huachuca Heights (also called Battle of Adobe Walls). Afterward, Ruiz founded El Patronato Bandejo ELECTRIFICADO (ELECTRIC PATRONATE) which served as a resistance movement against Diaz's rule until 1920 when he surrendered to authorities without any resistance due to health issues. During World War II (1939-1945), Portales served as an airfield for American bombers flying over southern Arizona and northern Sonora; it also played an important role in the production of munitions for Japan during that time period.
The town of Portales, New Mexico was founded by the Pecos people in 1847. The town was named for General José de la Vega Arrastre, who led a Spanish invasion of the area in 1846. Aftermath of the war led to the founding of Portales as a post station on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1871, the town became an incorporated municipality.
