They continued to sell firearms lubricants until 1984 when they closed their doors for good. Harkins, developed an improved gun lubricant that acted as both a preservative and propellant agent. This recipe includedphaltum (a type of asphalt) as well as castor oil and benzine. It was first used on shotguns and revolvers before becoming common on rifles and pistols. The popularity of handgun lubrication continued through World War II until modern technologies replaced traditional methods with lube guns. By 1945, handgun lubricants had become standard practice among law enforcement officers throughout the United States
Rio Rancho is located in the Mexican state of New Mexico, about seventy-five miles east of Santa Fe. The town was founded by the Pecos family in 1847 and became a stop on the Santa Fe Trail. The Pecos were a wealthy ranchers and their land included much of present-day Rio Rancho. In 1860, John Wesley Powell traveled through Rio Rancho on his investigation of the Grand Canyon. After his journey, many people in Rio Rancho began to believe that they could travel to see the Other World from their ranch homes. In 1871, when gold was discovered in eastern New Mexico, some settlers decided to move to what would become Rio Rancho. By 1880, there were more than 100 people living in Rio Rancho. For several years after gold was found at Silver Springs (now Trinidad), some residents decided to keep live stock on their properties while others went off into the hills looking for newuria (a type of mineral). When silvermining operations began near Trinidad in 1886, many residents abandoned their businesses and moved back into the townsite. Today, most people who live in Rio Rancho are descendants of those early settlers. The town has a rich history that can be traced back to its founding date. The Pecos family first settled here in 1847 and soon became involved in ranching activities which led to their establishment as one of New Mexico’s leading cattle ranchers. Over time they built up a large property which includes much of present-day Rio Rancho County along with portions of Arapaho County and Stanton County southward into Arizona Territory where they operated salt mines until 1898 when all these holdings were purchased by General Cosmopolitan Mining Company for $375,000 cash plus 10% interest payable annually thereafter! By 1903 most or all these lands had been sold again including over 60% – now known as the “Rio Rancho Hills” – comprising today’s city limits! It should also be noted that throughout this period there was no change whatsoever at headquarters; management continued unchanged until 1952 when it relocated from Albuquerque, NM) In 1870 John Wesley Powell passed through town on his trip around America but did not visit because he had other interests at that time! Rio Rancho was founded by New Mexico land grantees in 1875 as a cattle and sheep ranch. The community name, Rio Rancho, is Spanish for "river of the red earth." The town site was chosen because of its abundance of red earth, which is found in the area. Today, Rio Rancho remains a small but thriving community with a population of around 400. The first settlers to what is now Rio Rancho were ranchers who had purchased land from the Apache and Puebloan people. They began to build homes in 1876 and started trading goods with the Mexican government. In 1880, they formed an agricultural society that marketed their products to other parts of New Mexico and Colorado. By 1888, they had five families living in the town site. In 1912-14, residents voted to incorporate as a city under the name Rio Rancho City Corporation. However, this decision was overturned on appeal due to lack of support from local businesses. In 1916-17, citizens again voted to incorporation as a city under the name Rio Rancho but this time it passed with only 10 percent against it. This vote signaled growing civic interest in the community; however, there was no formal declaration of cityhood until 1947 when it became part of Alamosa County
The Rio Rancho region of New Mexico was a location in the late 19th century where cattle and sheep farming occurred. In 1857, a group of Mormon missionaries traveled to this region and began establishing missions there. The area became popular for sheep ranching after it became available due to the high quality of the woolen fabrics that were produced in this region.
