Rio Rancho, New Mexico is a small town located in eastern New Mexico. It was founded in 1846 by the Rivera family and has been around since then. The town is named after José María Páez, who was the first white settler in what is now Rio Rancho County. Today, Rio Rancho is a thriving community with a population of over 4,000 people. The history of Rio Rancho begins with José Francisco Rivera and his wife, Maria de la Concepción Avila Rivera. José Francisco was from Spain and had immigrated to New Mexico in 1821. He arrived at Yuma River where he met Maria de la Concepción Avila who was also from Spain. They married in 1826 and soon started to build a house in what is now the heart of the town. The couple had two children: Isidoro and Gilberto Rivera. Rio Rancho quickly became an important stop on the Santa Fe Trail because it lay near some of the most important settlements on that route including Socorro City, Gallup, Bisbee and Tombstone. In 1847, Gilberto Rivera built a store on Main Street which served as a hub for trade between nearby villages and Santa Fe itself. The store prospered until 1850 when new residents moved into the area and destroyed Gilberto’s building. This led to increased trade through other stores established along Route 66 which bypassed Rio Rancho altogether during this time period. In 1861, Josefina Carbajal bought land adjacent to Main Street for $1 per acre which she used as her private farm until her death in 1865 without leaving any children behind her (Her husband died three years later). From here on out, farming became one of Rio Rancho’s mainstay industries while the town slowly began to grow around it due to its location close to major hubs of commerce (including Santa Fe). During World War II, many soldiers spent their days working at local munitions factories located across the highway east of town before returning home late at night or early in morning so they could continue their work uninterruptedly once they left campgrounds back home (this phenomenon is commonly known as “the Gila Bend Incident”). Some Of these soldiers are still commemorated today with statute markers that can be seen throughout downtown Rio rancho (these markers were erected by members of the Army veteran community after their research discovered several unmarked graves within walking distance of Main Street).
