Amityville, New York is a small town in the Mohawk Valley of upstate New York. It was founded by John Amity in 1755 and became an incorporated village in 1825. The Amity family ran the town for over two centuries until it was destroyed by fire on July 11, 2018. The Village of Amityville was first established as a hamlet by John Amity on December 12, 1755, when he purchased 2 acres (8 ha) of land from the Dutch West India Company for $100. The name "Amityville" originated from the fact that John and his wife Susanna had been born at the same time and were friends. They named their new settlement after their mutual friend and fellow settler Samuel Seward who also resided in what is now Amityville Township. John AmITY'S FAMILY: HISTORY AND MEMOIRS OF JOHN AMITY It was not long before business began to pick up around the little hamlet of Amityville thanks to its isolated location, good grazing land, and easy access to water supplies both natural and man-made. By 1800, with construction underway on a road leading into Manor County from Watertown through present-day Scranton/Wilkes-Barre,Amityville's businesses saw an increase in trade as travelers passed through on their way north or south. In 1810, one of those travelers was James Ketchum Sr., who identified himself as traveling salesman for J&K Paper Merchants Inc., makers of paper products including high value types such as parchment paper and checks. crossing into Pennsylvania during President George Washington's visit there that year; he stopped at Amityville for lunch on his way back home to Lancaster County He tells us about this stopover in his memoirs: I had intended to go directly home but found my stomach so upset that I determined to spend some more time hereabouts before continuing my journey; accordingly I made coffee while they ate bread - amply satisfying my hunger - then went into business again while they finished off their noon meal This stopping place would become quite familiar to future generations because it would later be called Ketchum's Corner! As word spread about this fashionable tea stopover near Lancaster County’s capital city (then called Harrisburg), visitors naturally sought outaughlin’s store where they could purchase items like fine flour & sugar etc., which only increased when Amos SEWARD opened his own store next door soon after – filling the need for quality goods at an affordable price without sacrificing quality or customer service! James Ketchum Sr.'s experiences within these early days left him with lasting impressions which stayed with him long after he passed away – credit goes squarely to Amos SEWARD! For many years thereafter we continued using “Ketchums Corner” locally referentially even though our actual store moved several times over the years due primarily to fire insurance reasons! So much has changed since then including population size fluctuations resulting from World War II & other events; however aspects like marketing research still play a significant role today when it comes time planning our town's calendar events!
