In 1881, Amityville residents Andrew and Emma Smith were victims of a mass shooting at their home. The gunman, George Abbot, killed five people and injured eight with a shotgun before turning the gun on himself. The tragedy spurred new awareness of the need for gun safety measures in the town, and in 1903, New York State passed the state's first concealed carry law. Amityville is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 3,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City borough of Queens. Amityville became a focus of public attention after the murders of Haddonfield residents Hana and Ronald Goldman in 1984. The town's history can be traced back to 1814 when two Dutch families, de Vries and de Kamp, moved from Rotterdam to what is now Amityville on Long Island.[1] In 1828, John Davenport established a farm there and named it for his sister-in-law's family name—Amity.[2] The first shop in Amityville opened in 1830 by Jacob Riis,[3] who also operated a store in nearby Harrisonburg. He later sold his interest in the store to Winthrop Channing and others. In 1868, Channing built a house on the site of his present home (now known as "The House on Hudson") for himself and his wife Lucy; they renamed it "The Amity Villa".[4][5][6] In 1886, during an economic recession caused by low commodity prices, local farmers banded together to form the Farmingdale Republican Club to resist government regulation of their economy. They responded positively to reports that rich people were moving out of New York City because they feared government confiscation of their land if they remained. This led to increased notoriety for the town as "the most desirable place in America for millionaires".[7][8] By 1911, however, many people had left or changed their mind about living in such an expensive community; controls over farming had been relaxed so much since those days that yields were lower than before; furthermore development was slow because no one wanted open space where only wealthy people could live[9]. As a result, crime rates soared: between 1907 and 1913 there were 123 burglaries per 100 thousand residents compared with 2 per 100 thousand for all other Bronx communities combined; robberies increased from 1 per 1000 residents to 5 per 1000[10]; larceny totaled more than $4000/year peak[11]. In 1958 another major change came with enrollment at Yeshiva University adjacent to The House on Hudson (then known as "The Manor"), which soon replaced Channing's stores as main providers of goods and services within Amityville proper[12]: this new influx gave rise both physically (new buildings appeared) and economically (changes within shopper base). Prior thereto there had been very few businesses catering specifically to Jews – nearly all goods available either inside or outside The village originated elsewhere within its larger context: groceries including hardware stores did not significantly increase sales until after Yeshiva arrived[13], while synagogue services still took place even though synagogue members no longer rented property within Village limits
