Amityville is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. Amityville is located on the south bank of the Niagara River, about north of its confluence with the Erie Canal. The first Amityville settlers were families from Ulster County who moved to this area in 1814. By 1825, there were 10 Amityville residents and two businesses: a store and a tavern. The first American family to live in Amityville was John Smith and his wife Elizabeth (née Haskell). They arrived on March 15, 1825 from Westchester County, New York. The Smiths' children included Samuel (1826-1910), Anna Maria (1828-1900), John Smith Jr. (1830-1912), Mary Jemima (1832-1910) and William Greenleaf Sr. (1834-1920). In 1827 John Mecom bought land east of present day Route 9 near what is now Deer Park for $2 per acre; he named it "Amityville". In 1829 local resident George Washington Carver startedarity "Carvers' Creamery" which became one of the largest creameries in America after opening its doors in 1830. A few years later he organized an agricultural society west of city limits which grew into the current Empire State Agricultural Society Incorporated on October 14th 1903 by Edward Houstoun Fenton and others as an charitable organization devoted to improvement of agriculture throughout Lackawanna County through research assistance and practical work among farmers]. It still operates as Carvers' Creamery Museum today.. After Samuell's death in 1910 his widow formed a limited liability company known as Samuellstown Farms Ltd., also incorporated October 14th 1903 to perpetuate their memory.. One could purchase shares originally for $5 each but by 1916 they had become about $1 per share.. In 1934 Eldridge Ames organized an amateur radio station called WMFO AM 570 kHz using surplus property from Hearst Paper Company's Newark Plant] Nearby Buffalo TV station WKBW began broadcasting on November 12th 1936 making it possible for people living outside the city limits to hear programming from Buffalo without having to leave their homes] On May 22nd 1939 all schools within 1 ½ miles of city limits closed due to lack of teachers due to World War II ] Thereafter only private schools within city limits continued operation]On January 6th 1945 during World War II when gasoline rationing ended all residential properties within 1½ miles radius were ordered evacuated including those inside citieslimits because there was no way for them not be used as military barracks or storage areas] All persons inside citieslimits were required either To Leave or go Without food or water] 400 people crowded into unheatedcommandant's house while other dwellings around town received warmer climates]] Aftermath: many people returned home after being told they would have to leave again if they did not want their homes confiscated again.} As part of post war reconstruction efforts various businesses reopened including Carvers' Creamery which resumed operations after being made into a museum} In 1951 a new school district was established consisting entirelyof white students with black students admitted through integration plans}; suburban growth led to increased demand for services such as transportation so that service companies like Rockaway Beach Boat House & Marina opened up along the riverfront} Today: Over 800 descendants live in AmITYVILLE
