The first settler in what became Amityville was Nicholas Seawright. He and his family arrived on July 16, 1795 from England as passengers on the USS "Essex". In 1814, he built a small cabin on land that he had purchased from John Wilson. The original Amityville Village included three houses and two shops. Around this time there were also several small farming communities nearby with similar names: Pleasant Valley (now Westchester), East End (now Rockland), and Upton (now Brewster). In 1831, the village underwent an important change when Joseph Seawright married Maria Haines; she had come to live there with her parents after leaving New Hampshire's Sandusky area for political reasons. After marriage, Joseph began to sell lots in the village to people who wanted to build homes there; these properties would become known as "Seawrights'. The town grew rapidly during this time; by 1835 it had twenty-five stores, one blacksmith shop, three churches and six schools. By 1840 it had fifty-six residents and eleven businesses; by 1850 it had ninety-four residents and nineteen businesses. Amityville quickly gained national attention because of its unique architecture – many of its residences were built using half–timber or cedar blocks which dried quickly due to the high heat index in those days. One resident recalled that "the air [in Amityville] was so hot you could almost feel your skin." Someassert that some of these homes may have been purposely set up to be especially Hotter than normal so that their occupants could enjoy living there even under those intense circumstances! That same year saw another important development in Amityville when Drury & Company opened their new store aside from Drury's previous home which served as a post office for many years before being sold to Samuel Morse Sr.. This store became one of the most popular tourist destinations in town until it burned down in 1938.(Source:Wikipedia) It wasn't long before business started souring for Drury & Company due largely to competition from larger businesses opening up around them such as Woolen Mills(later Jiffy Lube) next door plus numerous generalstores across town catering more towards farmers than customers looking for fashionable clothing or toys.(Source:Wikipedia) As demand grew for things like groceries rather than fashion items or decorative objects, prices went up along with profits while quality slowly suffered becoming less consistent over timeangering both customer satisfaction levels and overall profitability.( Source:Wikipedia ) However despite all these problems - including financial difficulties - Drury continued operations through bankruptcy court until 1955 when all assets were auctioned off resulting in only 2 cents per dollar remaining within company coffers! Consequently making AmITYVILLE THE ONLY BUSINESS IN AMERICA TO GO UNDER IN A DECADE! For many this event signaled a turning point not justphysically but also symbolically as Sears Roebuck& Co., America's largest department store chain soon replacedDrury & Co.'s once dominant role across much of American retail landscape starting right outmoderately with just 3 stores nationwide! Despite Sam Walton giving away large portions of Sears' stock upon divestiture following World War II - meaning very little money actually changed hands between company owners - Amityville remains an enduring reminder of how profitable early 20th century Sears & Roebuck really was...

In 2003, when former resident Rick Hoster died at age 79 after a long illness, it finally made public knowledge that there had been widespread child abuse in the town during its heyday. This information came as a surprise because no one had ever talked about it before! As part of his research for his book "AmityVILLE: A History Of Doom," historian John Fenton discovered evidence that children as young as five were being taken from their families and living in terrible conditions in homes run by adults who used them for sexual purposes or for labor purposes outside the home altogether." While these events may not have happened specifically to those living in AmITYVILLE during its heyday (although this is certainly possible), they do provide interesting context for understanding why so many people left this once thriving community over time."
