Polk; as a result, all land east of Ontario Street (now Second Avenue) within the City limits were included within NY until 1821 when they were re-estabLISHED as Townships with then Mayor John Dickinson presiding over them In 1827 Cortland Township contained 4 farms only During World War II there was an air raid on Cortland on October 15th 1942 which destroyed many homes including one that still stands today known as “The Bunkers”

The village of Cortland was established in 1784 by John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Canada. The name is derived from the French word "corte" meaning 'ash heap'. The population of Cortland increased rapidly during the early 18th century due to its location on the border between New York and Pennsylvania. In 1792, a post office was founded in the village and it remained active until 1840. In 1800, John Dickinson served as president of United States; he is also credited with creating Delaware County in northwestern Pennsylvania. During his time in office, he appointed Isaac Brock as the first Native American justice of the peace for western Pennsylvania. Cortland became a manufacturing town during the late 19th century and played an important role in nation's economic development during this period. It was also known for its local musical tradition which began around 1850 and continued until shortly before World War II.
