Cortland, New York is a small town located in upstate New York. The population was 6,980 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most rural areas in New York State and has been largely unchanged since its founding in 1792. One of the few remaining colonial buildings in Cortland is the Old State House, which served as the home of the state legislature from 1792 to 1801. The first settlers in what would become Cortland arrived by ship in 1614 and built their homes on land that now includes Spring Street and Main Street. The first post office was established here on May 25, 1802. In 1825, Isaac Brock erected a log cabin on what is now Mill Pond Road for his family’s purposes as a farmstead. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Cortland attracted many new residents who were interested in agriculture or viticulture. Many of these pioneers started their own businesses such as Brock’s Ferry Boat Company (founded 1868), Hiscox Cement Works (1897), or Ewing Seed & Feed (1907). Today, there are numerous small businesses operating within downtown Cortland and throughout the agricultural area east of town along Route 9W. In 1907, John Browning designed an earplug called the "Buck's Ear Plug." This earplug was designed to protect users during hunting rites such as buckskinning by grounding them against hard surfaces instead of their ears! Cortland, New York is a town in Cortland County, New York, United States. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by Dutch farmers in 1714. It was named after Colonel Hendrik Steenwyck of Amsterdam and his family who came to America in 1624. The first Baptist church was built in 1828 and the first school was opened in 1833. In 1898, the towns of Auburn and Rome merged to form Cortland together with the village of Rome which had been consolidated from two other villages, Maplewood and Watertown. In 1907, Cortland became an independent municipality under the name of "Cortland". In 1924-1925 it annexed parts of neighboring Watertown to form a new municipality called "Watertown-Cortland". On December 12th 1928, as part of efforts to consolidate all villages within Cortland County into one municipality effective January 1st 1929 (the merger had been announced on October 3rd 1927), Rome merged with Woodstock to become one entity with its own police officer and fire department while Maplewood remained separate but still within Cortland County. On December 5th 1933 a fire destroyed most of downtown Rome including much valuable property including both churches (St John's Episcopal & First Presbyterian) as well as many homes; this event is generally considered to be the start of what is now known as "Rome's Great Fire" which caused extensive damage over several days throughout downtown Rome before finally being extinguished by local firefighters about two weeks later using hoses brought from trucks parked outside). This fire also served as a catalyst for enacting legislation that eventually led to consolidation between all villages within Cortland County into one municipal entity effective January 1st 1929. As per Village Consolidation Act #22 §1(a)), on July 1st 1954 Geneva amalgamated with Haverhill & North Dumfries uniting their Female Infants ward with those belonging to adjoining Stoneham Township forming Lake George State Hospital District No2 which housed patients operated on or certified by NY State Nurses' Association & Children's Department until hospital closed Oct 1959 due to high cost & lack of space at present day site; former female infant wards located at various places around north dumfries are included among former Lake George State Hospital District No2 inmates today (& some transferred back home following closure). It has long been popular among descendants living hereabouts for small annual reunion/festivals celebrated typically around Labor Day weekend each year since earliest records can be found documenting such events dating back more than 50 years!
