Depew, New York is a small town in the northeast corner of New York State. It is bordered by Chenango County to the south and east, Ontario County to the north and west, and Schenectady County to the northwest. The population was 9,351 at the 2010 census. The name Depew comes from Dutch settlers De Peekskill who founded a trading post there in 1795. The first settler in Depew was Jedediah Smith who arrived on July 8, 1800. He built a log cabin near what is now Main Street and Indian Trail. A store opened in 1801 on Delaware Avenue which became known as "The Depot." In 1814, another store was incorporated called "The Smith's Store" by William Smith Sr.. In 1824deposit box number 259 at 5 South Main Street were destroyed by fire; this building still stands today as part of the depository for Post Office since it served as an early office until 1975 when it moved to its present location at 1 Albany Plaza. In 1830-31 Depew had one schoolhouse while other schools were established in nearby towns such as Vestal (now Westchester) and Rome (now Askonia). The first high school in Depew was taught by private teachers until it accredited with a state level program in 1902-03 under auspices of then Teachers’ College at Cornell University but closed due to financial difficulties soon after its opening. In 1865 during the American Civil War Union troops burned down the depot located on what is now Second Street between Elm and Washington Streets; this building still stands today as part of Eastman Kodak's research lab complex adjacent to main entrance on Freedom Ave., just east of downtown depewsite box number 261 which remained unharmed from that event until 1971 when it also caught fire resulting in extensive damage including most of roofing being replaced within 2 years with new gable roofs following instruction from architecturally minded community groups having gathered around Independence Hall during reconstruction efforts following devastating 1985 tornado attack which destroyed much business district including original depot site) . Today major portions remain standing although some windowsills have been removed for fear they will fall into view once again during renovation work currently ongoing adjacent First & Second streets fronting main entranceway directly across from old depotsite - enabling only limited views inside Historic Depot Complex From street side all exterior facade appears largely intact except for large dent caused by earlier arson attack which left large hole above rear wall through floor line all interior walls where upper story once stood prior to recent damage - interior plaster has mostly continued throughout entire surviving portion well beyond removal/replacement expected date - All said surface appearance suggests very little or no serious abuse or vandalism occurred within exterior nearly two hundred year period since property became part of town limits Dedication plaque attached outside Texas School Library facing southeast read: "Here lie buried those whose memory we honor here below" Inside Texas School Library wall display showing names of people buried there alongsidethe words: "From these honored grounds rise...the education our children receive"

Depew was a small town in upstate New York, on the border of Ontario County and Erie County. It is now a census-designated place (CDP) in Niagara County. The population was 1,511 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Depew was Nicholas de Peyster, who arrived around 1698. He named his land "Dewey" after John Dewey of Geneva, Vermont, one of the first Europeans to settle in what is now Niagara County. De Peyster's grandson Jameson bought 180 acres (8 ha) of the original Dutch settlement in 1714 and developed it into a small community with three churches and six homes. In 1768, Indian traders from the Kahnawake Nation traded goods with settlers near present-day Buffalo Creek on Long Island Sound; some of these traders may have been Depew residents Solomon Lowrey and Israel Putnam. In 1807, depopulated Fort Erie became part of Canada when Great Britain acquired that territory as part of its North American possessions following her victory over France in the Seven Years' War. The new Canadian government made it clear that all native people living within its boundaries must leave by 1825 or face forcible removal; this policy effectively ended any Native American settlements east of Lake Ontario. Although many local Indians remained until after Confederation in 1867 when they were granted full citizenship by Canada, Depew lost much of its population during those years due to forced migration westward along the Niagara River into other parts of Canada as well as abroad. In 1830–31 there was an inflammatory fight between farmers and loggers working for Simon Fraser Ranch on White Mountain; this event is sometimes called "The Battle at Beaver Dam." The militia killed more than eighty men including twenty-five Loggers while retreating from the scene; white violence against aboriginal people continued even after this initial incident had ended. By 1840 most Native Americans living within Canadian borders had either left or been forcibly removed westward across Lake Ontario to reach British Columbia or points north where they could live safely under British rule without fear of being forcibly removed again should their presence be discovered.
