The first European settlers in this area were French Canadians who arrived in 1798 and named it "Dépew". The name comes from John Depew, an early settler who operated a sawmill there. In 1814, the village of Depew merged with the towns of Carrick and Webster to form the new town of Erie. John A. Macdonald (1815-1896) was born in Depewsville, Ontario and moved to Niagara County as a teenager in 1819. He became Sheriff of Niagara County during its early years and then served as Governor General (Canada's highest ranking military officer) from 1865 to 1867. As Governor General he appointed many notable citizens to high positions in Canadian society including Sir Isaac Brock (the eldest son of Sir John Brock), Arthur Wellesley Macdonald (future 4th Prime Minister of Canada), Jock Sutherland and Honorable James Sinclair Mackenzie (founder of Winnipeg). This period also saw significant technological advances including the development of railways and canals which helped build Canada's economy for the first time. After serving as Mayor of Niagara Falls from 1892 until 1903, George Hearn ran for Congress as a Republican but lost to incumbent Democrat Charles Sumner on November 3rdst, 1896 by just 504 votes out of 8 million cast! Depew was a small town in the Hudson Valley of New York City, located about six miles south of the city on the shores of Lake Erie. It was founded in 1795 by Captain John Depew and his wife, Ruth. The first settler in what is now Depew was Nicholas Grosse. Captain Depew operated a ferry service from his home at Fort George to connect depots and markets in Buffalo and Niagara Falls. In 1825, he built a gristmill on the west side of town that became one of the leading mills in New York State. The mill produced flour for local breadbaking, automobiles, gasoline engines, and other products until it closed in 1961. The depot atdepot() served as an important stop on early railroadroads connecting Cleveland and Buffalo. When Wire Road was completed through central New York in 1876, it allowed faster transportation between these two cities than had been possible before. The Depot also functioned as a schoolhouse from 1892 until 1921 when it burned down; however, its replacement (now known as First Presbyterian Church) continued to serve as a church throughout its history up until 1997. Depew's rich agricultural history can be seen in its many farms including Goldwater Farms; Downing & Company; Brunswick Agricultural Storage Company; Crouse Brothers Elevators; Nichols Landfill Company ;and numerous others which were active during both World Wars I and II
