Elmira (population: 8,500) is a small town in western New York, United States. Elmira is the only village in the Town of Elmira-Onondaga and the only incorporated settlement in that town. The first Europeans to see and visit the area were French traders who landed on Long Island in 1614. The first known settlers in what is now Elmira were families from Argyle, Scotland who arrived around 1764. They started a trading post at what is now the corner of Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. In 1812, John McCloskey, a Norwegian immigrant, founded one of the most successful fur companies on Long Island with his brothers Alexander and Nicholas McCloskey. After McCloskey's death in 1835 his sons continued operations until their bankruptcy in 1854. In 1813, Major General George Armstrong Custer attacked and burned Fort Niagara during his fight for independence from Great Britain. The battle resulted in over 20 Americans dead and dozens more wounded or captured including Pomponius Attucks who was scalped after being taken prisoner by Custer. This event helped spur development of nearby Buffalo as an important agricultural center during the 19th century due to its abundance of cheap labor provided by Native Americans working on agriculture projects sponsored by European colonists
As Elmira begins its history, it was a small village on the banks of the Mohawk River. The first people to live there were the Haudenosaunee, a Native American tribe. In 1795, a group of English colonists arrived in what is now Elmira and began to build their homes and businesses. They named the settlement "Elmira" after one of their leaders, Sir George Washington. In 1814, the United States acquired New York from Great Britain during the War for Independence. As part of this deal, Elmira became part of the new United States. The settlers here continued to grow and make their living from agriculture and other businesses until around 1840 when they lost access to markets due to fires that swept through parts of New England. During this time, some of the young men in Elmira started looking for ways to make money outside of farming or trading goods with other communities. One such man was Isaac Brockman who decided to start an insurance company in 1841. This business would later become known as Brockman & Co.. In 1850, Elmira had 4 churches and over 100 residents. By 1870, it had only 2 churches and 30 residents remaining
