Fulton, New York is a city in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of the Erie Canal and has been settled since 1795. Fulton grew rapidly during the 19th century as a manufacturing center for cotton and other goods produced by localły farmers. The city's main business district is now centered around its two hospitals, University Hospital and Albany County Medical Center. In recent years, Fulton has become known for its arts and cultural attractions; it hosted the 2013 Broadway musical "The Great White Way" and has become home to the metropolitan government headquarters of New York City. Fulton was named after Nicholas-Jacques de la Nouvelle-York (1678–1753), an early French settler in what is now upstate New York who helped lead development of what would become Fulton County. La Nouvelle-York built a post office at present day Fulton in 1795, naming it in honor of his friend General James Wilkinson who had led British forces against American independence during the Revolutionary War. The first house on Main Street in present day Fulton was built by Deacon John Armstrong in 1807. A store opened on Union Street in 1811, followed by mills operated by Armstrong, Jno McNiven, Abraham Lincoln & Co., Edward Everett Hale & Sons – all owned by Armstrong – until they were destroyed by fire in 1862. By 1840, over 100 businesses had opened along Main Street alone; such success encouraged other entrepreneurs to open similar stores throughout town and make Fulton one of the most active commercial communities in America. In 1847, Samuel Morse established his own telephone line from Watertown to Middletown using five miles of Improved gauge wire laid down near today's Niagara Falls; this became known as Morse code because many educated Americans could understand it while living elsewhere without access to phone lines or international signaling systems then available). By 1860 there were over 350 businesses operating along Main Street with 2½ million pounds (1 ton) worth of merchandise turnover annually! In 1872 William Maxwell erected a large frame building on what is now Fayette Avenue which served as both his business establishment and home until he sold it several years later to Julius Rosenwald who used it as an experimental station for electrical research begun at Yale University under Professor Willis Hallockfield between 1893-1894 leading to creation of electricity industry which would eventually employ over half a million people across North America including many from Fulton!

After independence was declared, Fulton quickly became one of America's most prosperous cities. In 1815, it resulted in passage of the Ulysses S. Grant Tariff which helped revive economic activity in Fulton and other eastern towns during what is known as the "Great Erie Canal Era." However, as times changed and new technologies emerged that could no longer be supported by local businesses alone, Fulton began to experience slowdowns and decline. By 1960 it had shrunk to just 100 residents and its economy had been seriously hurt by competition from larger towns such as Rochester and Buffalo. However, revival efforts led by Mayor David Dinkins succeeded in bringing about significant resurgence over the past few years that has seen Fulton resurgent as an economic force once again – albeit still smaller than some of its former rivals).
Fulton was founded in 1785 by James Fulton and his wife Deborah. The city's first courthouse was built in 1793, and the first steamboat was launched in 1804. In 1825, the city became a United States town. In 1839, it became an incorporated village. On July 1, 1898, Fulton merged with the city of New York to form a new municipality called New York City Boroughs.
