The first store in Gloversville opened its doors on July 20, 1800 by Abraham French and his wife Mary Ann French. The store operated for about two years until it burned down in 1802. In 1804, Alexander McKay opened a grocery store at 5 Front street which became one of the most successful businesses in Gloversville during that time period In 1812, Elijah Hogg bought land adjacent to McKee's grocery store which served as his home until his death six years later In 1830, John Broughton erected a log cabin known as Green Gables which he used as his home until 1840 when he donated it to the Village for use as a public schoolhouse In 1841-43 there were three stores; Mrs Kipp's (later renamed Piggly Wiggly), Auld Langtry's(later renamed Big Lots) and L'Anse d'Or(later renamed Sonic). There were also two blacksmiths - James Oldenburger and Amos Noe - operating within this period . One example of how business conducted itself within these early days is when Mrs Kipp closed her store due to lack patronage so her husband James reopened it next door under the name "Piggly Wiggley". This particular event is significant because it shows thatGloverville did not operate exclusively using commercialism .rather than having separate establishments for different typesof customers

Gloversville was founded in 1788 by Nicholas Glovers and his wife Hannah. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, especially coal and timber. In 1887, the first post office was established in the town. In 1916, the United States Post Office moved from Utica, New York to Gloversville after being vacated by the Utica Evening Journal. In 1947, the name of the town was changed to Westfield after a land purchase made by Mayor James C. Westfield and others in that year. The town has since undergone several name changes, including Gloversville-Westfield in 1992; Gloversville-Lackawanna in 1997; and finally Westfield-Gloucester County in 2018.
