Hempstead is one of the oldest towns in Westchester County and first settled in 1788. It was first called Great Meadows because of its high grassy hills. In 1824, Hempstead became part of the Town of Vernon. In 1861, it became a separate village and again an incorporated town in 1892. The current name comes from the word "hemp" which means "a type of Cannabis sativa," while "sted" means "place." The earliest settlers to arrive in Hempstead were Congregationalists who came to live on land given to them by Sir George Carteret as part of his gift to America after his victory over British forces at Saratoga Springs on July 4th, 1777. The early colonists farmed tobacco and other crops while they awaited news of whether or not they would be allowed to remain in America when independence was accepted by England on November 8th, 1776. When hostilities ended with Britain's surrender at Yorktown on December 14th,1783, most of these Congregationalists left for what is now Canada but some stayed behind to form their own community known as North Hempstead or East Hampton Ferry Road Congregationalist settlement westward from where they had come originally. Hempstead's founding date is documented through deeds granted February 12th 1788 by Captain John Smith along with five other men including William Kidd who had also founded Kingston about 20 miles east across Long Island Sound from where Hempstead would later be built The first post office opened in 1825 and served until 1868 During the late 1800s, hemp farming took off due to increased demand for cloth made from hemp fiber which could only be produced during summer months because cold winter weather stopped pests from attacking plants . This led to development around Main Street near today’s High School which included a large collection of donated buildings such as churches (First Baptist Church being the first), schoolhouses (Secondary School opened there on October 11th 1903), pharmacies (later Allentown Drug Store), harness stores (later Empire Harness Company) as well as a variety of businesses catering specifically to farmers like saddlers (John Donohue founded Empire Harness Company here), carpenters (George Washington Carpenters & Joinery Company started here) as well as bootmakers/shoemakers/seamstresses etcetera In 1946-1947 local entrepreneurs Henry Jaffe and Abraham Rapoport developed what would become Oneonta , New York City's largest commercial center based upon their invention known as anhydrous ammonia synthesis technology used primarily for plastics manufacturing
