It grew rapidly during the 19th century, and by 1815 had a population of 1,500. In 1825, Johnson City became the seat of Livingston County. In 1828, it was renamed for Henry Clay Johnston, who had served as United States Senator from Georgia from 1827 to 1830. In 1898, Johnson City became part of the newly created New York Statehood movement and was renamed Albany.
